Let me be straight with you. I've been training performers for 30 years. I've coached Broadway professionals, guided amateurs in Northern Virginia to professional stages, and watched countless students transform their lives through the performing arts. But I've also seen talented, gifted people crash and burn because they entered this industry unprepared for what it would demand of them. And here's the thing that breaks my heart: most of them had all the talent in the world. What they didn't have was clarity about what this journey truly requires.

I was one of them once. In high school, I was at the top. Perfect pitch. Voice and piano competitions where I took home the highest awards. I could play pieces by ear that others spent months learning. I thought that was enough. I thought talent would carry me. Then I hit the real entertainment industry, and I nearly lost myself completely. I was so focused on being what everyone else wanted me to be that I forgot who I was. I almost quit everything. If someone hadn't helped me find my way back to my authentic self and my true purpose, I wouldn't be writing this to you today.

That's why I'm asking you these five questions. Not to discourage you. Not to crush your dreams. And here's something else you need to hear: even if you go to college and get your BFA, even if you attend Juilliard, Carnegie Mellon, or the University of Michigan, the very top schools in the market, those programs will never fully prepare you for the reality of this industry unless you can answer "yes" to all five of these questions.

Don't depend on your degree. Don't depend on the name of your school. Those things matter, but they're not enough. You still need to be able to say yes, with absolute certainty, to every single one of these questions. Because I've seen graduates from the best programs in the country struggle and fail when they didn't have these foundations in place.

Question 1: Can You Handle Rejection as Your Daily Reality?

The Hard Yes: You understand that for every "yes" in this industry, you'll hear a hundred "no's." You can walk out of an audition where you gave your absolute best, hear "thank you, next," and still show up to the next one with full commitment and confidence.

Rejection Isn't the Exception!

It's the Rule

Here's what I need you to understand: rejection in this industry isn't occasional. It's not something that happens now and then. It's the baseline. You will be told you're too tall, too short, too young, too old, wrong type, right type but wrong day. You'll nail an audition and still not get the part because someone else knew someone. You'll be perfect for a role and lose it because of budget cuts. You'll sing your heart out and be cut in the first round because they decided to go in a different direction.

Building Your Resilience Muscle

If you can't say yes: You need to start building your resilience muscle now. Start auditioning for everything you can. Put yourself in positions where you'll face rejection regularly. Take the lead in your school show, then audition for the chorus in a professional company. Apply for programs you're not sure you're ready for. Get comfortable with "no" before your livelihood depends on hearing "yes." The performers I've trained who've made it to Broadway? They didn't have thicker skin. They had stronger cores. They knew who they were independently of anyone else's opinion of their performance.

Question 2: Are You Willing to Invest in Yourself When No One Else Will?

The Hard Yes: You're prepared to pay for voice lessons, acting classes, dance training, headshots, travel to auditions, and professional development even when you're working three side jobs to afford it. You see these as investments, not expenses.

Nobody Is Coming to Save You

Let me tell you something about this industry: nobody is coming to save you. Nobody is going to hand you a career. The ones who make it are the ones who invested in themselves long before anyone else saw their potential. I've seen students work retail during the day, take classes at night, perform on weekends, and somehow still find time to practice their craft at 6 AM before their shift starts. That's not glamorous. That's not what you see on Instagram. But that's what it actually takes.

Preparation Costs More

Than You Think

The entertainment industry doesn't reward potential. It rewards preparation meeting opportunity. And preparation costs money, time, and sacrifice.

Get Your Financial House in Order

If you can't say yes: Get realistic about your finances right now. Create a budget that includes training as a non-negotiable line item. Find a flexible job that allows you to take classes and go to auditions. Start saving now for the investment you'll need to make in yourself. Consider this: if you're not willing to invest in your own career, why should anyone else?

In my 30 years of training performers, I've never seen someone succeed who wasn't willing to prioritize their development over their comfort. Not once.

Question 3: Can You Separate Your Self-Worth from Your Performance?

The Hard Yes: You know that a bad performance, a failed audition, or a critical review doesn't define your value as a human being. You can receive harsh feedback, learn from it, and move forward without internalizing it as a personal attack on who you are.

This is the question that almost destroyed me. This is the one I wish someone had asked me before I entered this industry. When you're naturally gifted, when things come easily, you start to believe that your talent equals your worth. Then you hit the professional world, and suddenly everyone is talented. Everyone worked hard to get there. And when you're not the best in the room anymore, when you're not winning anymore, who are you?

You Are Not Your Performance

I nearly quit because I couldn't answer that question. I had built my entire identity on being the top performer, and when that crumbled, I had nothing left. Here's what I've learned and what I teach every single student at Lopez Studios : you are not your performance. You are not your audition. You are not your reviews. You are a complete human being with inherent worth that exists completely independently of what you do on stage.

Do the Inner Work Now

If you can't say yes: Stop right now and do the inner work. Find a therapist who understands performers. Work with a coach who focuses on building the inner performer, not just the technical skills. Develop hobbies and relationships that have nothing to do with performing. Create an identity outside of your art. This industry will try to make you believe that you're only as good as your last performance. If you believe that lie, it will destroy you. I've seen it happen too many times.

Question 4: Do You Have a Support System That Will Tell You the Truth?

The Hard Yes: You have people in your life who will celebrate your successes without feeding your ego, call you out when you're making excuses, and remind you of your purpose when you lose sight of it. These people love you enough to be honest, even when the truth is uncomfortable.

It's Not Talent!

It's the People Around You

I'm going to tell you something that might surprise you: talent isn't what separates the people who make it from the people who don't. It's the quality of the people around them. The performers I've trained who've gone on to professional careers all had one thing in common: they surrounded themselves with people who wouldn't let them settle. Not yes-men who told them they were perfect. Not critics who tore them down. But honest, loving people who demanded their best and called them higher.

When I was at my lowest point, ready to quit, someone in my life had the courage to say, "You're not being authentic. You're trying to be what you think everyone wants instead of being who you are." That conversation changed everything.

Start Building Your Circle Today

If you can't say yes: Start building that circle now. Find a mentor who's been where you want to go. Connect with other performers who are serious about their craft. Distance yourself from people who only tell you what you want to hear.

And here's the hard part: you need to be coachable. You need to be able to receive honest feedback without getting defensive. If you can't handle the truth from people who love you, you'll never survive it from an industry that doesn' t.

Question 5: Are You Doing This for the Right Reasons?

The Hard Yes: You're pursuing this career because you can't imagine doing anything else. Because performing feeds something deep in your soul. Because you have stories to tell and a unique voice that needs to be heard. Not because you want to be famous, not because you want people to adore you, not because you're running from something else.

The Foundation

Everything Else Is Built On

This is the question that matters most. This is the foundation everything else is built on. I ask every student who comes through my doors: Why do you want this? And I keep asking until we get past the surface answers. Past "I love performing" or "I've always wanted to be on Broadway" to the real, honest truth underneath.

External Validation Will Destroy You

Because here's what I've learned in three decades of training performers: if your reason is external validation, this industry will chew you up and spit you out. If you're doing this to prove something to someone, you'll never be satisfied. If you're chasing fame, you'll be miserable even if you get it. But if you're doing this because performing is how you make sense of the world, because you have something to say that can only be said through this art form, because this is your calling and your contribution, then you'll find a way to build a life in this industry. Maybe not the life you imagined. Maybe not the life that Instagram tells you it should be. But a real, sustainable, fulfilling life doing what you love.

Find Your True Why

If you can't say yes: Stop. Don't take another step forward until you've done the soul-searching work to figure out your true why. Spend time in therapy. Journal. Meditate. Talk to people who know you well. Get clear on your motivation.

And if you discover that your reasons are external, that doesn't mean you can't perform. It means you need to shift your relationship with it. Make it a hobby. Do community theater. Enjoy it without the pressure of making it your career. But if you're going to make this your life, you need to be doing it for reasons that will sustain you through the inevitable struggles, rejections, and challenges.

I've been there for the callbacks, the rejections, the big breaks, and the hard decisions. And here's what I know for sure: you deserve the truth, even when it's tough to hear.

The Conversations Nobody Wants to Have

I've had versions of this conversation dozens of times, sometimes with students, sometimes with their parents sitting across from me in my studio. I can see it in their body language when the information isn't landing well. The crossed arms. The defensive posture. The looks exchanged between parent and child that say "he doesn't understand" or "he doesn't believe in me." Trust me, I get it. Nobody wants to hear that their dream is going to be harder than they thought.

But here's why I keep having these conversations anyway: because my job as a vocal coach isn't just to make you sound better. It's to prepare you for the real world of this industry. And honestly? I'm standing here having this conversation with you because I failed to give up and move on. This career didn't look the way I thought it would when I started, but I'm still here, still doing what I love, still making a living with my voice and my passion for teaching.

My Own Journey: From Doubt to Direction

Let me tell you something about my own journey because I think you need to hear it.

I'll be honest, I hesitated being this vulnerable. Sharing these parts of my story isn't easy. But I've understood over my 30 years in this industry that vulnerability speaks truth to power. And my job as a vocal coach, as a mentor, is to empower my students to understand their worth and to build them up. I can't ask you to be brave if I'm not willing to be brave first.

I grew up training in piano and voice as a young teen. My parents had no experience in this industry, they were just supporting a kid who loved music. I had perfect pitch, which people told me was a gift. I could play a piece on the piano by ear after hearing it just once. I was energetic, upbeat, the kind of kid who couldn't contain his excitement about music. I had tons of friends, or at least people I thought were my friends, because of my outgoing personality.

But you know what happened? People criticized that personality. There was jealousy. There were comments that made me shrink instead of shine. And slowly, I stopped thinking positively about myself. I went through high school absolutely crushing it on paper; top scores in voice and piano competitions at the countywide, district, and state levels, plus honors choirs. I was literally the best in the county. But inside? I still didn't believe I had what it took to be successful. My surroundings had convinced me that something was wrong with me, that my gifts weren't enough, that I wasn't enough.

Then someone came into my life who saw something different. They saw that I had a gift that needed to be shared, not just in my musical skills, but in my ability to connect with people. They helped me realize that my energetic, upbeat personality wasn't something to hide or tone down. It was part of what made me special.

The Philosophy That Changed Everything

That's when everything changed. I connected to the philosophy we now teach at Lopez Studios Inc. that real strength comes from the inside, that your worth isn't determined by other people's opinions or jealousy, and that when you truly believe in yourself, the sky is the limit. I used that same resilience when I decided to build this performing arts school. People told me it wouldn't work. They said I'd never make it happen. But I refused to give up. 1. The Numbers Are Tough—But They're Not There to Scare You

Let's get the hard part out of the way first. According to Actors' Equity Association (the union for stage actors), about 85-90% of professional actors are looking for work at any given time. The average union actor makes around $7,500 per year from acting jobs alone. Broadway ensemble members might make great money when they're in a show, but most performers spend way more time auditioning than performing.

Here's why I'm telling you this: not to make you give up, but to help you make smart choices. Every successful performer I know has a backup plan that isn't really a backup, it's part of their career.

They teach voice lessons (like I do). They choreograph local shows. They perform at weddings and corporate events. They do voiceover work. They have side jobs they actually enjoy. Some of my most successful former students are the ones who built diverse income streams early, so they could say "yes" to the right artistic opportunities without panicking about rent.

The encouraging truth: When you plan for the reality of this industry, you actually have more freedom to pursue your art. You're not desperate. You're strategic.

2. Talent Gets You in the Room—Other Things Get You the Job

You might be the best singer in your school, your city, maybe even your whole state. That's amazing! Seriously, celebrate that. And then understand this: when you go to New York or LA, you'll be auditioning alongside hundreds of people who were also the best in their school.

I've coached students with absolutely stunning voices who moved to pursue Broadway and realized they were now "just" one of many incredible singers. It's not that they weren't good enough, it's that the talent bar is so high that something else becomes the tiebreaker. What actually books jobs? A mix of being right for the role, knowing people in the industry, auditioning on the day they're looking for your exact energy, persistence (showing up to audition after audition), being easy to work with, and yeah, sometimes just luck and timing.

The encouraging truth: Once you accept that talent is your foundation (not your whole house), you can start building the other skills that create lasting careers. Things like how to network without being fake, how to nail an audition even when you're nervous, how to run your career like a small business, and how to bounce back from rejection without losing yourself. These skills can be learned. And they matter just as much as your high note.

3. The Industry Will Typecast You—Here's How to Make It Work For You

Real talk: casting directors will put you in a category based on how you look, how tall you are, your age, your ethnicity, and your vibe. If you're 5'1", they're probably not considering you for roles that require you to be physically imposing. If you've got a quirky, character-actor energy, you won't book the traditional romantic leads.

This feels limiting at first. It feels unfair. And sometimes it is. But here's what the working performers figured out: instead of fighting their "type," they became so ridiculously good at roles within their type that they're the first person casting directors think of. They stopped auditioning for everything and started auditioning smart, for roles they could actually get.

The encouraging truth: When you figure out your type and own it, you stop wasting energy on auditions you were never going to book anyway. You start building a reputation as the person who's perfect for certain roles. And that's how you actually build a career. Plus, as you get older and gain experience, your type can expand. But you've got to start somewhere real.

4. Success Doesn't Have to Mean Broadway (And That's Actually Great News)

Broadway is incredible. It's the dream for so many people. But here's something that might surprise you: there are thousands of performers making a living in theater and entertainment who never set foot on a Broadway stage.

Regional theaters all over the country hire performers year-round. National tours mean you get to travel and perform in different cities every week. Theme parks like Disney employ hundreds of singers and actors with steady paychecks and benefits. Cruise ships offer six-month contracts where you perform and see the world. There are performing arts schools (like mine!) that need talented teachers who are still active performers.

I've had students who spent years struggling in New York, barely scraping by, constantly stressed. Some of them came back to the DC/Virginia area and now they're directing shows, teaching students they adore, performing with local theater companies, and actually paying their bills while doing work they love. They thought they were "giving up" at first. Now they realize they just redefined what success looks like.

The encouraging truth: A creative career doesn't have to look like everyone else's dream. You get to design a life where you're actually using your gifts, making money, and enjoying yourself. That's not settling—that's winning.

5. Protect Your Mental Health Like Your Voice—It's That Important

This is the one I wish someone had emphasized to me when I was starting out.

This industry involves constant rejection. You'll hear "no" way more than "yes." You'll watch people who aren't as talented book jobs you wanted. You'll compare yourself to everyone. You'll feel pressure about your appearance, your age, your relevance. The financial stress of not knowing when your next paycheck is coming can be overwhelming. I've watched incredibly gifted students develop disorders, anxiety, and depression while chasing this dream. Some of the most talented people I've taught eventually left the industry, not because they weren't good enough, but because it was destroying their happiness and sense of self.

So here's my rule: your mental health is more important than any role, any audition, any dream. Full stop. This is why at Lopez Studios Inc. we teach from the inside out. Yes, we work on technique, breath support, vocal placement, all of it. But we start by building who you are as a person first. We focus on your confidence, your self-worth, your ability to walk into any room knowing you have value regardless of whether you book the job.

Too many programs focus exclusively on making you a better singer or dancer without asking whether you believe in yourself. They polish the exterior without strengthening what's underneath. And then students get into the real world, face their first wave of rejections, and crumble because nobody taught them that their worth isn't tied to a yes or no from a casting director. At our school, we don't do quick transactions where you show up, get your lesson, and leave. We build relationships. We care about how your day went. We celebrate who you are becoming, not just what you can perform.

Because here's what thirty years has taught me: students who know they're valued unconditionally, who understand their worth comes from within, are the ones who survive this industry with their joy intact. When you're grounded in that kind of self-knowledge, rejection doesn't destroy you. It disappoints you, sure. But it doesn't make you question your entire existence.

If pursuing this career means you're constantly miserable, something needs to change. See a therapist who understands performers. Build friendships outside the theater world. Develop hobbies that have nothing to do with performing. Create an identity that isn't only about whether you're currently cast in something.

The encouraging truth: The performers who last for decades in this business are the ones who figured out how to protect their peace while chasing their passion. They have boundaries. They have balance. They know their worth isn't determined by a casting director's decision. That's not weakness—that's wisdom. And it's what allows them to still love this work twenty years in.

Here's What I Really Want You to Know

If you've made it this far and you're thinking "Maybe this isn't for me," that's okay. This industry isn't for everyone, and knowing that now saves you years of struggle. But if you're thinking "This sounds hard, but I still want to try", then I'm excited for you. Because you're going into this with your eyes open, which already puts you ahead of most people.

The entertainment industry can give you moments of pure magic. Standing ovations that make you cry. The feeling of nailing a song that gives the audience chills. Friendships with cast members that last a lifetime. The satisfaction of teaching a student who just got their first professional role. But it gives those gifts most consistently to people who are smart, prepared, flexible, and honest with themselves about what they're willing to sacrifice and what they're not.

After thirty years of doing this, here's what I believe: the students who "make it", whatever that means for them, aren't always the most naturally talented. They're the ones who are strategic, resilient, adaptable, and kind to themselves. They train like athletes. They plan like entrepreneurs. They dream big but make practical choices. And they remember that being a performer is something they do, not who they are.

I'm living proof that you can have a career in this field even when it doesn't look like the original dream. I'm here because I refused to give up on music and performing, I just got creative about what that looked like. Now I run a successful performing arts school, I teach singers every day, I'm still connected to this world I love, and I have stability and fulfillment. That's not failure, that's adaptation. That's sustainability. That's actually succeeding on my own terms.

So yes, dream big. Train hard. Go for it. But also make a plan, take care of yourself, and know that your value as a human being has absolutely nothing to do with whether you ever perform on Broadway.

I want to talk about something that's on a lot of our minds, but a subject we often avoid: the unspoken tensions that can exist in our arts community. It's the quiet competition, the feelings of envy, and the lack of care that sometimes creep in behind the scenes. After 30 years in this profession, I've come to see that these issues, though rarely discussed, deeply affect us all. I believe it's time we start having this conversation, not to point fingers, but to help us all reflect and create a more supportive and thriving environment for everyone involved.

The silence around these struggles can be so isolating. It allows feelings of insecurity and competition to grow, slowly chipping away at the joy we all found in the arts in the first place. Whether it's a comment that diminishes someone’s talent or a subtle sense of exclusion, these experiences can be truly disheartening.

Understanding the Source: Insecurity and Unresolved Feelings

I've learned that negative behavior in our field often comes from a place of insecurity and personal challenges. When people feel a sense of inadequacy or have unresolved issues, it can sometimes be easier to project those feelings onto others. It’s never personal, even when it feels that way. Recognizing this isn't about excusing hurtful actions, but it does help us approach these situations with more understanding. When we can see that someone's criticism might be rooted in their own struggles, it can change how we respond and protect our own well-being.

The Ripple Effect: Our Influence on the Next Generation

As directors, instructors, and parents, we have a profound influence on the young people in our care. When adults and other students create a culture of negativity, it sends a powerful message that these behaviors are acceptable, even necessary, to succeed in the arts. This happens across the board, from professional stages to local studios.

Think about how this can play out:

Between Directors & Instructors: Instead of celebrating a fellow professional's success, some might speak ill of their work or their students. This kind of thinking prevents us from building a true community.

Between Studios & Companies: When different studios or companies compete for students and audiences, it can create a tense atmosphere that holds us all back from our collective potential.

In High School Theater: At a time when young people are most vulnerable, a director’s favoritism or an overly competitive mindset can be deeply damaging to students who are just finding their voices.

Among Parents: When parents get caught up in gossip about other students, families, or staff, it filters down to their children, creating a stressful environment for everyone.

Student Created Drama & Accusatory Behavior: An environment that allows for toxicity can unfortunately lead to drama amongst students, as well as hurtful and accusatory behavior directed at other students and instructors. When this is not addressed, it creates a lack of trust and a difficult environment for everyone.

Our actions and words matter. The way we interact with each other teaches the next generation how to be artists. Let’s make sure we’re teaching them to be collaborative, compassionate, and secure in their own work.

A Sincere Message to Fellow Instructors and Artists

To my fellow professionals, the directors, vocal coaches, acting instructors, and everyone else who dedicates their lives to this work: We are all here because we love this. We share the same mission of creating art and helping people grow. It’s so important that we support each other and recognize that a different approach doesn’t mean it’s a wrong approach. The fact that a colleague teaches differently from you or runs their program differently doesn't make their method less valid.

There's a powerful truth in the idea that "competition happens at the bottom; collaboration happens at the top." When we are truly confident in our work and our purpose, we have no time or energy for tearing others down. Instead, we are too busy learning from one another, celebrating each other's achievements, and working together to elevate our entire profession. There is plenty of opportunity to go around for everyone, and every artist has a unique voice and a unique path.

To the Parents in Our Audience

To the parents, your role in this community is incredibly important. You are your child's first and most influential director. The way you speak about other students, other parents, and staff sends a powerful message. It can be so easy to get caught up in the desire for your child to succeed and to see them in the lead role, but please remember that their artistic journey is their own. Let them fall in love with the process, the community, and the art itself. The most powerful thing you can do is to be their biggest supporter, not just their biggest critic. Let them find their own way and learn the value of collaboration over competition.

A Word to Our Students

To the students, the heart of our community: We see you. We see the pressure you're under, and we know that competition and jealousy among peers can be incredibly tough. Please know that your artistic journey is not a race against others. Your worth is not determined by the size of your role, the sound of your voice, or what someone else thinks of your performance. You have a fleeting moment to connect with the adjudicators and draw them into your world. Unfortunately, many aspiring performers mistake "giving it their all" for showcasing every vocal run or dramatic gesture they're capable of. This often stems from a desire to impress externally, rather than focusing on the fundamental task: telling the story and embodying the character from the inside out.

The Root Cause: A Focus on External Talent

From amateur auditions to professional Broadway-level tryouts, I've seen the same pattern. Performers who over-sing and over-act are usually not focusing on telling the story. What doors does it open, and just as importantly, what does it not guarantee? Let's get real about the particulars.

What an Equity Card Is and What It Does

First and foremost, an Equity card signifies your membership in the Actors' Equity Association, the U.S. labor union for professional stage actors and stage managers. This union was founded over a century ago to protect the rights of performers in an often-exploitative industry. When you become a member, you gain access to a host of benefits that are designed to professionalize and stabilize your career.

The Power of Protection: The most significant benefit is the union's collective bargaining power. Equity negotiates contracts with producers to ensure its members receive:

Minimum Salaries: A guaranteed base pay that is a living wage, not a meager stipend.

Access to Auditions: For many, the Equity card's biggest draw is the access it provides to auditions. Is an Equity Card Required?

This is a question I hear all the time, and the answer is both yes and no.

It is NOT required to be a professional actor. You can have a thriving career in regional theater, commercials, film, and TV without ever having an Equity card. In fact, many successful actors choose to remain non-union for years to work on a wider variety of projects and build their resume. There are countless non-union productions from small independent theaters to non-union tours that provide valuable experience, networking opportunities, and a paycheck.

However, it IS required to work on most union contracts. If you aspire to perform on Broadway, on a major national tour, or at one of the many prestigious regional theaters across the country that have an Equity contract, you will eventually be required to join the union. Once you are hired on a qualifying union contract, you become a "must join" member. The card is the price of admission to that level of the industry.

So, is it required? Not to be a working actor, but it is required to work in the professional unionized theater world.

What an Equity Card Does NOT Guarantee

Now, let's talk about the hard realities. While your Equity card is a powerful tool, it is not a golden ticket. It's vital to be realistic about what it is and what it isn't.

1. It does not guarantee you a job. Having an Equity card simply gets you in the room. It does not guarantee you'll be cast, or that you'll have a consistent stream of work. The competition for roles remains incredibly fierce, and your talent, professionalism, and network are still the ultimate factors in getting hired.

2. It does not guarantee a high salary. While Equity sets a minimum wage, many members' annual earnings from union contracts are still quite low. The vast majority of actors need to have a "day job" or a "side hustle" to make ends meet. The Equity card protects you from being exploited, but it doesn't automatically make you a full-time, self-sustaining actor.

3. It can close off certain opportunities. Once you join Equity, you are generally prohibited from working on non-union productions. This means many smaller regional theaters, storefront productions, and non-union tours are off-limits. For actors in smaller markets or those just starting out, this can be a significant drawback. It's a trade-off: you gain union protection, but you may lose out on some local or experimental work.

4. It comes with financial obligations. Membership isn't free. You'll need to pay a one-time initiation fee, along with annual dues and "working dues," which are a percentage of your earnings from Equity contracts. These costs are part of the investment you make in your career and your union, but they are a factor to consider.

A well-prepared book shows casting directors and music directors that you are not just a talented singer, but a serious artist ready for the stage. Every performer, from high school students to seasoned professionals, needs an audition book because it represents their professionalism, preparedness, and versatility. It ensures you're ready for any situation, whether you're asked for a specific style of song or a different cut on the spot.

What Broadway Expects from Your Audition Book

When you walk into a professional audition, you're expected to be ready. The music director has a limited amount of time, and your audition book is your first impression. Here’s what they're looking for:

Professionalism: Your book should be a clean, sturdy 3-ring binder . No tattered pages, no loose sheets, or personal notes that could confuse the accompanist.
Clarity: The sheet music must be legible and easy to read. The accompanist is often sight-reading your piece for the first time.
Organization: Every song should be in a page protector, and multi-page songs should be taped together in an "accordion style" to eliminate page turns. A table of contents is a must for quick access.
Preparedness: You must have a range of songs ready. You might be asked for a different song on the spot, and fumbling through your book is not an option.

Selecting and Preparing Your Song Cuts

Choosing the right cut of a song is a strategic skill that showcases your talent efficiently. This is the part of your audition that truly demonstrates your vocal and acting ability in a condensed format.

The "Rule of Three": For every song in your book, you should have three versions prepared: a 16-bar cut, a 32-bar cut, and the full song.

16-Bar Cut: This is for "cattle call" style auditions where they need to see a lot of people quickly. Its purpose is to get the casting director interested enough to call you back.
32-Bar Cut: This is the most common audition length. It gives you enough time to tell a mini-story and show off your vocal range and emotional depth.
Full Song: This is reserved for callbacks, where they want to see the full scope of your performance.

How to Select the Perfect Cut:

Find the Story Arc: Your cut, no matter the length, should have a clear beginning, middle, and end. It should tell a complete story. Avoid choosing a section that feels random or unfinished.
Start Strong: The first few bars of your cut should grab the listener's attention. Don't start with a slow, meandering intro. The moment you begin, you should be in character and in the moment.
Show Your Vocal Strengths: The cut must showcase the best parts of your voice. If you have a powerful belt, make sure that section is included. If your strength is a clear, high head voice, show it off.
End with a Bang: Your cut should build to a climax and end cleanly. Don't just fade out or stop awkwardly. The last note should leave a lasting impression.

Preparing Your Sheet Music:

Clearly Mark Your Cuts: Use a highlighter to mark the specific start and end points of your 16-bar and 32-bar cuts. This is crucial for the accompanist.
Add Specific Notes: Use a pencil to write in any specific instructions for the pianist, such as "faster tempo," "slower here," or "hold for drama." These notes should be minimal and legible.
No Page Turns! As mentioned before, tape your sheet music together in an accordion fold. This is non-negotiable for a professional audition book. The last thing you want is the pianist fumbling with pages while you are singing.

What NOT to Include and What NOT to Do

Just as important as knowing what to include is understanding what to avoid. These common mistakes can derail your audition before you even sing a note.

Things NOT to Include:

Illegible Music: Don't use photocopies of photocopies, or music with messy, handwritten notes all over it. The pianist needs to read the notes and markings clearly.
Random, Loose Pages: Avoid any loose sheets of paper or music that could fall out. Everything should be securely in a page protector and in your binder.
Lead Sheets (with exceptions): Unless you are a professional who can provide a separate part for the accompanist, avoid using lead sheets (just the melody and chords). A music director expects a fully arranged piano/vocal score.
Sticky Notes and Unnecessary Markings: While a few small, neat markings for cuts are okay, avoid putting sticky notes or excessive personal scribbles on the music.

Things NOT to Do:

Forget Your Key: Know your song's key and have the sheet music in that key. Don't bring a song and ask the pianist to transpose it on the spot.
Have Page Turns: You should never, ever have a page turn for the accompanist during a short cut (like a 16 or 32-bar cut). Tape pages together in an accordion fold.
Bring the Wrong Cut: Make sure your sheet music clearly shows the exact cut you plan to sing. Mark the start and end points with a highlighter.
Choose "Overdone" Songs: While a few classics are okay, having a book full of songs like "On My Own" or "Defying Gravity" can make you seem unprepared or lacking in originality. Find unique songs that showcase your voice and acting.

The Steps for Building a Professional Book

The Binder: Use a sturdy, black 1-inch to 1.5-inch 3-ring binder . Place a headshot and a copy of your resume in a sheet protector at the front.
The Table of Contents: Create a typed Table of Contents. This is a simple but highly effective way to show you are organized and professional.
Organize by Category: Divide your book with tabs by musical theater era or genre (e.g., Golden Age, Traditional, Contemporary, Pop/Rock). This helps you find the right song quickly.
Cuts are Key: For each song, prepare a 16-bar cut, a 32-bar cut, and the full song. Highlight the cuts on the sheet music.
Secure Your Music: Put each song in its own page protector. For multi-page songs, tape the protectors together in an accordion fold.
Placing Your Resume/Head Shot: For the most professional presentation, you should place your headshot and resume in a clear page protector at the very beginning of your binder, before the table of contents and any sheet music. This makes it the first thing a casting or music director sees when they open your book.

The Headshot: Your Visual First Impression

Size & Type: The standard professional headshot is an 8x10 inch photograph. As of 2025, it is imperative that your headshot is in color. Black and white headshots are now considered outdated and unprofessional for modern auditions, as casting directors need to see your true appearance, including your hair, eye, and skin color.

Physical Attachment (Hard Copies): For in-person auditions where you are asked to bring a physical copy, the standard practice is to staple your resume to the back of your 8x10 headshot. If you've ever seen a parent's face after their child didn't get the lead role they wanted, you know the look. It's a mix of hurt, confusion, and a little bit of "I think they're playing favorites." But what if I told you the truth is a lot funnier and more complicated?

Hey everyone, Victor Lopez here. For over 30 years, I've had the immense privilege of working with some of the most talented students and families in Northern Virginia through Lopez Studios Inc. I’ve seen countless auditions, watched dreams take flight, and, yes, I’ve also seen a lot of disappointment.

One of the toughest parts of my job is helping students and parents navigate the emotional roller coaster of casting. I've heard it all: "They didn't get the part because the director doesn't like them," "The director is playing favorites," or "My child is clearly the most talented, so why didn't they get the lead?" These are understandable feelings, but they're almost always based on a fundamental misunderstanding of how the casting process actually works.

Let's be real: Casting is not a talent competition. I know, I know, that sounds crazy. But in my experience, talent is only about 1% of the equation. The other 99%? That's logistics. Pure, unadulterated, often-hilarious logistics.

So, let's pull back the curtain and peek behind the director's table. What are we really thinking about?

1. The Physics of the Stage

Imagine you’re directing Wicked. You have two fantastic singers who are vying for the role of Elphaba. One is 5'2", and the other is 6'0". Now, let's say your Glinda is a petite 5'1" and the Fiyero is a solid 6'3". The visual dynamic on stage is everything. We have to consider things like:

Sightlines: Will the audience in the back row be able to see everyone?

Balance: Will a very tall lead make a shorter supporting cast member disappear?

Chemistry: Do these two actors, side by side, create a believable and balanced picture?

We've had auditions where an actor’s voice was perfect, but their height made them impossible to cast in a specific role because they would have completely overshadowed their scene partner. It’s not about talent; it's about making the picture work.

2. The Great Puzzle of the Ensemble

Think of a show like Les Misérables. It's not just about finding your Jean Valjean and Javert. It’s about creating a living, breathing world. The ensemble is the soul of the show, and casting it is like solving a massive puzzle. We need to find people who can:

Vocal Range: Do we have enough tenors and basses to create that powerful choral sound?

Dance Ability: Can this group pull off the choreography? Do we have enough strong dancers to carry the scenes?

Look: Do we have enough actors who can believably play the roles of soldiers, students, or townspeople of a certain era?

I remember a time when we had a dozen incredibly talented sopranos audition for a show, but we only had two baritones. If we cast all the sopranos, our group numbers would sound… well, they'd sound pretty thin. We had to make the difficult decision to cast a less vocally strong but equally committed mezzo-soprano because her vocal range was what we needed to make the entire chorus sound complete. It wasn’t a slight against the other singers; it was a choice made to serve the entire production.

3. The Funny, Unexpected Logistical Challenges

Sometimes, the reasons for casting decisions are downright bizarre. I'm talking about things you couldn't possibly know.

The "Double-Booked" Actor: An actor might have the lead role in their sights, but we find out they're also committed to another show or a major family event on a key rehearsal day. It’s a sad but simple fact: if you can't be there, we can't cast you.

The Sibling Factor: This one's a classic. We might have two incredibly talented siblings audition. We’d love to cast both, but if they're playing enemies on stage, and we know they fight like cats and dogs off stage, we might have to make a tough call to preserve the peace in the cast and the integrity of the rehearsal process.

The "Right" Kind of Crazy: A director once told me about a student who was a fantastic actor, but he was cast in a smaller role because his chaotic energy and a tendency to go rogue in rehearsals would have made it impossible to get the whole show ready on time. He was a brilliant performer, but the director knew he couldn't handle the pressure and responsibility of a lead.

4. The Broadway Reality

In my own career as a lead vocal coach, I’ve had students and clients go on to perform on Broadway. I have seen this process at the highest level, and the rules don't change just because the stakes are higher. In fact, they become even more pronounced.

Even the most seasoned, brilliant, and talented actors have to compete for parts. And just like in our studios, only one person can get the role. Think about it: when Idina Menzel was cast as Elphaba in the original Broadway production of Wicked, do you really think she was the only one with the talent to play the part? Of course not. She was up against other powerhouse performers like Stephanie J. Block, who also delivered a fantastic audition. In the end, the directors had to choose. It wasn’t a matter of one being more talented; it was a choice that fit the ultimate vision for the show.

Every single actor on that stage, from the leads to the ensemble is a professional with immense talent and a long history of hard work. They all competed for their spot, and many equally talented actors didn't get it. This is simply the reality of the industry.

Next time you don’t get a part you wanted, I want you to remember this: It’s not a rejection of your talent. It’s a logistical decision made for the greater good of the show. Your talent is still there. Your hard work is still valuable.

And let's get real for a second: not everyone can be the lead. If you have five amazing actors who are all perfect for one role, only one of them will get it. It's a simple mathematical fact. One person will land the part, and the other four all equally talented and deserving will not. This doesn't make them failures or mean they did anything wrong. It just means the director had to make a choice.

This is a lesson I even apply in my own casting processes for our school's productions. Even though I know what's required and I prepare my students to the highest level, I never, ever promise anyone a specific part. Sometimes, even when I think they might be the best for the role, a different choice is made for reasons like chemistry or overall balance of the cast. It's why I've learned that you can't promise anything, even when you're the one in charge.

We always encourage our students to feel what they feel, and you have every right to be disappointed. But at some point, you have to understand the bigger picture, pick yourself back up, and move on. The directors and casting committees aren't against you. They're on a quest to build the best possible show, and sometimes, that means making choices that don't make sense from the outside.

Let's start a new chapter where we celebrate every role, big or small, because we know that every single person is a crucial piece of the puzzle. Story 1: The Audition Interrupted by an Unruly Lunch

I had a student in for a mock audition. He was a teenager and was absolutely terrified, but he was holding it together. He was singing a really serious, emotional song from a musical, and he was doing great. He was deep into a powerful verse when suddenly, his stomach let out a series of gurgles and groans that sounded like a small animal was in there, having a full-on argument with a lawnmower. He stopped singing, completely mortified, and just stared at me with wide eyes. I just looked at him, and all I could say was, "Well, it sounds like your body is giving you a standing ovation." He burst out laughing, and the rest of the lesson was a lot less stressful. It was a perfect reminder that the most professional performances can be derailed by the most ridiculous, uncontrollable things.

Story 2: The Time I Became a Human Metronome

You know how some students just have trouble keeping a steady rhythm, even with a metronome? I had this one young fellow, bless his heart, who was struggling with a particular up-tempo song. The metronome was clicking away, the backing track was playing, and he was just consistently... somewhere else. So, trying to be helpful, I thought, "Okay, I'll just snap my fingers." I started snapping vigorously, trying to lock him into the beat. He looked at me, looked at my snapping fingers, then suddenly, without missing a beat in his off-rhythm singing, he reached out, grabbed my snapping hand, and started shaking it like we were sealing a business deal, all while still singing the wrong tempo. He completely misunderstood and thought I was high-fiving him for doing a good job. I had to pull my hand back, stifle my laughter, and explain, "Buddy, I'm trying to give you the beat!" We still laugh about my failed attempt at being a human metronome.

Story 3: The Very Enthusiastic Spit Take

I was teaching a group class for younger kids, and we were doing some articulation exercises. We were repeating phrases really fast, trying to get crisp consonants. One little guy, about seven years old, was really getting into it. He was practically spitting out the words with gusto. We got to a phrase with a lot of 'P's and 'T's, something like "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers." He winds up, takes a huge breath, and on "peck of pickled peppers," he absolutely launched a tiny, perfectly formed projectile of spit directly into the hair of the student in front of him. The other kid slowly reached up, felt his hair, and then turned around with this utterly disgusted, bewildered look on his face. The "spitter" froze, horrified. I had to jump in, mediate the "spit-assault," and somehow keep a straight face while telling them both it was an accident. It was gross, hilarious, and definitely a memorable articulation lesson.

Story 4: The "You've Got Something on Your Face" Moment

I was working with a middle school student who was preparing for a role in a school play. She was a little shy, and we were practicing her lines and facial expressions in the mirror. I told her to really emote and show me what her character was feeling. She was concentrating so hard on being sad, scrunching her nose and trying to get a tear to come out. All of a sudden, she sneezed. It wasn't a big sneeze, just a little puff. She looked at me, mortified, because a single, tiny, perfectly formed booger was now sitting on her upper lip. She didn't have a tissue, so she just froze with this look of absolute horror. I tried so hard not to laugh, and just calmly said, "That's great expression! Now, let's take a quick tissue break." The look on her face was priceless. We both just started giggling and had to stop the lesson for a minute.

Story 5: Excuse Me, Mr. Lopez?

I'll never forget the time a male student came into the studio with this seriously weird look on his face. When I looked at him and said, "Buddy, are you okay?" he just kind of squirmed and said, "Not really, Mr. Lopez." My mind immediately went to all the usual things, he was nervous, he forgot the words, his throat hurt. I asked what was wrong, and he looked at me, completely serious, and said, "Well, you might be offended." Now I was really concerned. The Beginning of a Better Way

After going through vocal and theater programs in high school and beyond, I saw a culture I didn't necessarily like. I knew there had to be a different and better way. I needed so much more than just technical training. I needed someone to reach me and care about me, not for what I could produce as a performer, or even what I couldn't. I needed a mentor who saw the person first.

I remember being in high school with a passion for music that burned bright, but a confidence that flickered like a weak candle. I loved to sing, but the idea of truly putting myself out there, of performing with conviction, felt terrifying. I’d stand backstage, heart pounding, convinced I wasn't good enough, that my voice would crack, or that I’d forget the lyrics. I could practice for hours, nail every technical aspect, but when it came to that final step of truly believing in myself, I always stumbled.

This is a challenge we see every day, not just with performers but with instructors too. Many talented teachers and coaches are incredible at their craft, they can teach you the how-to of any skill. But a common pitfall in our industry is the sole focus on that technical side. They deal only with the outer person, not realizing that the inner person is the core of the performer. This is not to tear down the work of others, but to highlight a crucial piece of the puzzle that is often missed.

We have found that our success is built on this very distinction. By starting with the inner performer, by nurturing confidence, belief, and resilience, we create a foundation that allows technical skills to flourish. Our students succeed in the entertainment business and in life because they don't just learn to perform; they learn to own their power.

This approach can sometimes feel uncomfortable for those who aren't used to it. Many people are accustomed to a transactional relationship with their instructors, 30 minutes of a lesson and then out the door. But our studio doors are not revolving doors. We believe as teachers that we have to truly connect with the human being, the person, not just the student. It isn't often that you will come into a place of business and see teachers hugging kids, giving words of affirmation, and hearing "I love you" and "How was your day?" But that is the culture we have created, and we find that it works for us. In the long run, we see the benefit of it every time a former student, now an adult with children of their own, brings their kids back to our school. They come back and remember not just the lessons, but how loved, appreciated, and valued they felt. They tell me how those feelings of self-worth were the true foundation of their success in life.

If we can accomplish the main goal of having our students understand their self-worth and value, and know that they are unconditionally loved and appreciated, we believe the sky is the limit. There is no obstacle they cannot overcome and nothing they cannot accomplish. Their greatest strength is knowing their own power.

Union Minimums (SAG-AFTRA): The Screen Actors Guild – American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) sets minimum rates for its members. These rates vary significantly based on the type of production (e.g., theatrical film, TV drama, commercial) and the role's size.

I’ve seen them shine on stage, land lead roles, and celebrate their victories. But I've also seen the other side, the missed notes, the rejected auditions, and the quiet disappointments. And in those moments, I've noticed a pattern with parents that, while well-intentioned, can be a major roadblock to their child’s long-term success . I'm talking about the instinct to rescue them from failure.

It's natural to want to protect your child from pain. When they miss a line, get passed over for a part, or don't perform their best, it’s hard to stand by and watch them struggle. But what if the greatest gift you could give them is the space to fall? What if their biggest lessons aren't learned in success, but in navigating the stumbles?

The "Wrong Room": A Philosophy of Growth

I've always told my students, “If you are the top of your league in any room for an extended period of time, you are in the wrong room.” It's a phrase that often gets a raised eyebrow, but the truth is, true growth happens when you are challenged. An on-campus audition is a chance to walk the very halls where you might one day create, learn, and grow. This is your opportunity to not only show them who you are, but to feel in your heart if this place is where you truly belong. Open your eyes, your ears, and your soul to the feeling of this campus as your future is waiting to be explored.

The On-Campus Audition: Your Invitation to a New Life

Of all the auditions, this one is the most personal. This isn't just about a performance but it’s about finding a home. As you walk onto this campus, I want you to open your eyes and your heart. Listen to the students, talk to the faculty, and ask yourself a simple question: 'Can I see myself here?'

Understanding the Requirements

While you'll be performing your material, the on-campus audition is far more than a simple showcase. It's a full-day experience designed for both you and the faculty to get a true feel for one another. You’ll be evaluated not just on your talent, but on your potential to be a collaborative and teachable student. The requirements typically include:

The Audition: Your live performance is the centerpiece. This is your chance to show the faculty what you’ve worked so hard on.
Campus Tours and Class Observations: You’ll get to see the facilities, sit in on a class, and see how the faculty and students interact.

In-Depth Preparation

Do not show up without a list of questions. I tell my students to prepare at least five questions that go beyond what they can find on the school's website. Your questions should show genuine interest and an understanding of the program.

"What are the performance opportunities like for freshmen?"
"Can you describe the relationship between the music department and the theater department?"
"What do you feel is the most challenging part of the program, and how do students overcome it?"
"Are there opportunities for students to create and produce their own work?"

Mastering the Interview

This is your moment to shine as a person, not just a performer. They want to get to know the artist behind the audition. I prepare my students by coaching them on how to talk about their performing journey as well as what their biggest challenge has been, what they’ve learned from a past failure, and why this specific program is the perfect next step for them. Your answers should show passion, self-awareness, and a hunger to learn.

Reading the Room

Beyond your performance and your questions, your job is to observe. I've coached students who got into a top program but were miserable because they ignored the signs. During your tour and class observation, pay attention to the energy of the room.

Student-Faculty Interactions: Do the students seem comfortable and respected? Do they ask questions freely, or are they quiet and reserved?
The Overall Vibe: Is the atmosphere collaborative or competitive? Does it feel like a supportive community, or a cutthroat environment?

These are subtle cues, but they are crucial for determining if a school is the right fit for your personality.

What to Expect

The on-campus audition is a holistic experience. They are evaluating not just the person on stage, but the person who will be in their classroom for the next four years. They want to see if your work ethic and your personality align with their program’s culture. You might feel a mix of excitement and anxiety, but remember to stay present and engaged in every interaction. You're a performer, but today, you’re also an investigator.

The audition is over, and now it's time to just be a person. Take it all in. Was it the right fit for you? The most important part of this whole day was that it was a two-way street. I’ve stood in more hotel hallways during Unifieds than I can count. The air is thick with nervous energy, the sounds of humming scales and shuffling feet creating a symphony of possibility. You're not alone out there—every person you see is a dreamer just like you, chasing the same thing. So, before you walk into that first room, take a moment to soak it all in. This isn't just another audition; it's a celebration of every hour you've ever put in, and it's time to own your stage.

The Unified Audition
The Unified Audition is a true test of stamina, discipline, and preparation. It's a marathon, not a sprint, and as your coach, my job is to make sure you’re ready to win. Unified auditions are a series of centralized live auditions where multiple colleges and universities hold auditions in one location over a few days, allowing students to be seen by many schools without extensive travel. This format is a high-energy, concentrated marathon for aspiring performers.

Requirements

The requirements are simple: your prepared material, your body, and your voice, all ready to perform at a moment’s notice. For vocalists, this means your prepared songs must be memorized to the highest level of progress. But there's another crucial element I've seen trip up countless students: the accompanist. The faculty wants to see how you interact with a professional accompanist and if your sheet music is prepared.

How to Prepare

In my 30 years, I’ve seen that students who succeed at Unifieds are the ones who are organized and vocally resilient.

When and Where They Happen

Timing is everything in the audition process, and Unifieds are no exception. They typically take place in January and February, after most pre-screen deadlines have passed. This gives you a clear window to focus on live performances. The primary locations for these events are New York City, Chicago, and Los Angeles. While some smaller events may happen in other cities, the "Big Three" are where the vast majority of schools will be, making them the strategic choice for an efficient and effective audition marathon.

Prepare Your Sheet Music Like a Pro: This is non-negotiable. Your sheet music should be in a three-ring binder, printed on non-glare paper, and easy to read. Make sure every cut is marked clearly and there are no stray marks. Your accompanist is your partner for the next two minutes. Make their job easy.

The Art of the Pre-Audition Warm-Up: You will not have access to a grand piano in a soundproof room. I teach my students a 10-minute, silent warm-up they can do in a hotel room or even a busy hallway. We focus on breathing exercises and humming scales to gently get the voice ready without disturbing others. Hydration is key. I instruct all my students to carry a water bottle and to avoid sugary or dairy-heavy foods on audition day.

Communicating with the Accompanist: This is a defining moment. When you walk into the room, your first interaction with the accompanist sets the tone. I tell my students to be friendly, clear, and confident. Say your name and the name of the song, give the accompanist a clear starting tempo, and tell them exactly where you're starting and ending. A professional interaction shows maturity and poise.

The day is done. The voices are gone, the adrenaline is fading, and you're probably exhausted. But don't just collapse. Think about what you just did. You walked into room after room, faced countless strangers, and told your story. You're stronger now than you were this morning. I always tell my students that the college pre-screen is the first time you get to control the narrative. It’s just you and a camera in a quiet room, and for a few minutes, you get to show the world the most authentic, polished version of who you are. This isn't just a video submission; it's your chance to eliminate all the unknowns of a live audition such as the nerves, the room, the accompanist and focus solely on a flawless, powerful delivery. It's the moment you stop dreaming about doing and start doing. Let's dig in!

The Pre-Screen Audition

The pre-screen is your first impression, and unlike a live audition, you have complete control over every aspect. This isn't just a video; it's a meticulously crafted vocal resume.

Requirements

Beyond the standard monologues and dance combinations, the vocal pre-screen has its own set of unique demands. The schools want to hear your voice, and they want to hear it clearly. This means your songs must be recorded with a professional-quality backing track; never a cappella, and never with a low-quality MIDI file. Most schools ask for two contrasting songs. My top-tier students know this means showcasing not just vocal range, but emotional range. One uptempo, one ballad. One from a classic Golden Age show, one from a contemporary piece. A truly polished pre-screen will also include a "slate," where you introduce yourself and your songs. What I teach my students is that this slate is an audition in itself; it’s your chance to show your personality and command the camera.

How to Prepare

This is where the magic happens. We start this process in the summer before their senior year.

When to Do It

I've seen so many students scramble to get their pre-screens done at the last minute, and it always shows in their work. The majority of pre-screen deadlines fall in October and November, with some extending into early December. Because of this, what I tell my students is that the real work needs to be done in August and September of their senior year. This gives you ample time to shoot multiple takes, choose the very best ones, and go through the meticulous editing process without the stress of schoolwork piling up. By getting a head start, you can ensure your video truly represents your talent and you're not submitting something you're not 100% proud of.

Song Selection is Everything: As a vocal coach, I can't stress this enough: your song choice is the single most important factor. Avoid the overdone songs that every other student is singing. Find a piece that fits your voice like a glove and, more importantly, tells a compelling story. We work on not just hitting the notes, but conveying the emotion behind them. Your pre-screen isn't about vocal tricks; it's about authentic storytelling.
The Perfect Recording Environment: I tell my students, "Your pre-screen is only as good as its sound." You don't need a professional studio. A quiet, well-lit room with soft surfaces (like rugs or heavy curtains) to absorb echo is a perfect start. A simple but high-quality USB microphone can make all the difference. We practice microphone placement, ensuring the sound is clear and rich without distortion.
Filming Strategically: The performance on camera must be just as powerful as a live performance. We work on your "acting through song"; using your eyes and body language to connect with the camera. I advise my students to do a vocal warm-up before every take, just as they would for a live performance, and to take frequent breaks to rest their voice. This ensures their vocal health is maintained throughout the day of filming.

What to Expect

The waiting period can be the hardest part. What I tell my students is to submit their pre-screen and then move on. You've done the work. Now it's out of your hands. Know that your vocal talent and hours of preparation have given you the best possible chance of earning that coveted live audition.

One of the most crucial aspects of vocal training is a consistent and effective warm-up routine. These exercises not only prepare your vocal cords for singing but also play a significant role in stretching your vocal range and improving overall vocal agility. Neglecting to warm up is like asking an athlete to sprint without stretching, it can lead to strain and prevent you from reaching your full potential. So, let's dive into my top 10 vocal warm-ups designed to expand your range and set you up for successful singing!

Here are my go-to vocal warm-ups for stretching and increasing your vocal range:

1. Gentle Humming:

How to do it: Close your lips gently and hum on a comfortable, mid-range pitch. Focus on a relaxed jaw and throat. Gradually slide the hum up a half step and then back down. Continue this gentle ascending and descending pattern within your comfortable range.

How it increases range: Humming helps to gently wake up the vocal cords and increase blood flow to the larynx. The gradual slides help to stretch the vocal muscles in a controlled way, preparing them for a wider range of notes.

2. Lip Trills (Vocal Bubbles):

How to do it: Relax your lips and gently blow air through them, creating a "brrr" sound. Once you have a steady trill, try sliding up and down in pitch, starting in your comfortable middle range. Ensure your throat remains open and relaxed.

How it increases range: Lip trills help to relax the vocal cords and surrounding muscles, releasing tension that can restrict range. The airflow and gentle vibration also encourage coordination between breath and vocalization, essential for singing higher and lower notes with ease.

3. Tongue Trills (Rolled "R"):

How to do it: If you can roll your "r," do so while sustaining a comfortable pitch. Once you have a consistent trill, try gliding up and down in pitch, just like with the lip trills. If you can't roll your "r," you can try a voiced "l" sound ("luhluhluh") as an alternative.

How it increases range: Similar to lip trills, tongue trills help to release tension in the tongue and throat, which can often impede higher and lower notes. The consistent airflow and vibration aid in vocal cord flexibility.

4. Siren Sounds:

How to do it: Starting on a comfortable mid-range pitch, glide smoothly upwards in pitch like a siren, and then glide smoothly back down. Focus on a continuous, unbroken sound. You can use vowel sounds like "ooo" or "ee." Gradually increase the range of your siren as you feel comfortable.

How it increases range: Sirens are excellent for stretching the vocal cords through their entire range. They help to build smooth transitions between registers and improve pitch accuracy at the extremes of your range.

5. Octave Repeats:

How to do it: Sing a comfortable note on a vowel sound like "ah" or "oo." Then, jump up an octave to the same vowel sound, and then back down. Ensure the transition between the two notes is clean and that your voice doesn't crack. Repeat this several times, maintaining good breath support.

How it increases range: Octave repeats help you become more comfortable with the larger intervals in your voice, particularly the break between registers. Consistent practice can help to smooth out these transitions and increase your confidence in singing higher notes.

6. Five-Tone Scale (Ascending and Descending):

How to do it: Sing through a five-note scale (do-re-mi-fa-sol) on a comfortable vowel sound, starting in your middle range. Focus on smooth transitions between each note and maintaining consistent breath support. Once comfortable, sing the scale descending (sol-fa-mi-re-do). Gradually expand the starting pitch of the scale upwards and downwards as your voice warms up.

How it increases range: Practicing scales helps to build muscle memory for pitch accuracy and smooth vocal movement across a series of notes. Expanding the range of the scale gradually encourages your voice to explore and become comfortable with notes outside your usual comfort zone.

7. Arpeggios:

How to do it: Sing through a major arpeggio (do-mi-sol-do) ascending and then descending (do-sol-mi-do) on a comfortable vowel sound. Focus on clear articulation and smooth transitions between the notes. Gradually expand the starting pitch of the arpeggio upwards and downwards.

How it increases range: Arpeggios help to stretch the vocal cords across wider intervals and improve your ability to move smoothly between different parts of your range. They also encourage good breath control and vocal agility.

8. Consonant-Vowel Repetitions with Ascending Pitch:

How to do it: Choose a simple consonant-vowel combination like "nay" or "mee." Start on a comfortable pitch and repeat the syllable several times. Then, move up a half step and repeat. Continue this ascending pattern as far as you can comfortably go, maintaining good vocal technique.

How it increases range: This exercise helps to coordinate your breath, articulation, and pitch as you move higher in your range. The consonant helps to engage your breath support, while the vowel allows for open vocal production.

9. Yawn-Sigh:

How to do it: Take a deep, natural yawn, feeling the back of your throat open and your soft palate lift. As you exhale, let out a gentle sigh on a descending pitch. Repeat this several times, focusing on the relaxed sensation in your throat.

How it increases range: The yawn-sigh helps to release tension in the throat and neck muscles, which can often restrict higher notes. It also encourages a more open and relaxed vocal production, essential for accessing your full range.

10. Straw Phonation:

How to do it: Take a regular drinking straw and place it between your lips. Gently sing through the straw on a comfortable pitch using a vowel sound like "ooo." Try gliding up and down in pitch and even singing short melodies. The resistance of the straw helps to regulate airflow and encourages efficient vocal cord closure.

How it increases range: While it might seem counterintuitive, straw phonation helps to optimize vocal cord function and reduce tension. By singing through a straw, you can often access higher and lower notes with more ease and less strain, which can translate to an increased range over time.

Remember, consistency is key! Incorporate these warm-ups into your regular practice routine, and you'll begin to notice a greater flexibility and expansion in your vocal range. Pay attention to how your voice feels and never push beyond your comfortable limits, especially when you're just starting. Happy singing!

* Slating: You might be asked to “slate”; state your name. Sometimes they’ll ask for your height or age.

* Singing: Hand your sheet music to the accompanist. Be ready to start when they are. Make eye contact with the panel. Focus on your performance and telling the story of the song.

* Acting: Take a moment before you begin your monologue to get into character. Speak clearly and project your voice.

* Dance: If there’s a dance call, pay close attention to the choreographer’s instructions. Do your best and don’t be discouraged if you don’t get every step perfect.

* Be Polite: Thank the panel when you are finished.

Have you ever seen a singer, actor, or musician on stage and thought, "Wow, they have it all together"? The bright lights, the awesome costumes, and the applause are a huge rush. But what you don't see is the secret battle that almost every performer has to fight. The biggest problem isn't forgetting your lines or hitting a wrong note. It's something called self-doubt. Self-doubt is that annoying little voice in your head that whispers, "You're not good enough." It makes you feel nervous, and it makes you compare yourself to everyone else. It’s like having a little bully that lives in your mind.

I remember my own battle with this. When I was younger, I was auditioning for a play. I had practiced a song so many times I could sing it in my sleep. But right before I went on stage, my brain went into panic mode. All I could hear was that negative voice. My hands got sweaty, my heart pounded, and when I opened my mouth to sing, my voice was shaky. I didn't get the part. The crazy thing is, my voice was fine! The problem was all in my head.

I also saw this with one of my students, let's call him "Michael". He had an amazing voice, but he was terrified of singing in front of anyone. He would only sing when he was alone in a practice room here at Lopez Studios, Inc. We tried to help him get over his fear, but nothing seemed to work. Then one day, our piano player messed up and played the wrong note. It was so unexpected that Michael burst out laughing. In that moment, he saw that making a mistake wasn’t the end of the world. As a vocal coach, I've seen firsthand the incredible talent and dedication young performers bring to their craft. But I've also witnessed the heartbreak that comes with not getting the part.

It’s tough for a child to pour their heart and soul into an audition, learning lines, rehearsing songs, perfecting a dance routine only to receive a “no.” As a parent, your instinct is to protect them from that pain. But what if, instead of shielding them, we equipped them with the tools to navigate disappointment with resilience and grace?

Here are some compassionate, actionable strategies to help your child cope with rejection and build a foundation for a long and healthy relationship with their art.

1. Validate Their Feelings: It's Okay to Be Disappointed

First and foremost, let your child know that their feelings are valid. Avoid platitudes like, "It's not a big deal," or "You'll get the next one." While well-intentioned, these phrases can invalidate their emotions. Instead, try saying, "I know how much you wanted that role. It's completely okay to feel sad and disappointed." Create a safe space for them to express their sadness, anger, or frustration without judgment.

Congratulations! Your child just received their first invitation to audition for a role in an amateur or professional capacity. This is an incredibly exciting opportunity for your child to gain some experience as a performer. However, as a parent, you may be just as nervous as you are thrilled about this process. As your child and you are just dipping your toes into the world of auditions and working in the performing arts industry, it’s understandable that you are flooded with questions about preparing your child for their first audition.

Fortunately, the staff at Lopez Studios have been through this process countless times. As a result, we are well-practiced in helping children at our performing arts preparatory school smash their first audition. Here is a brief overview of what to do to feel more prepared for your child’s upcoming audition.

4 Tips For Preparing Your Child For Their First Performing Arts Audition

1. Talk to Your Child

In the hast of frantically preparing for the audition, planning your transport to the meeting, or setting up a quiet area in the house for a video call, it can be too easy to forget to sit down and just listen to your child and discuss the process with them.

Firstly, you need to ask your child how they feel about their audition and what they want to know about the process. Talking can help ease any anxieties and put your mind at ease as you can feel confident in their ability to know what to do and how to behave. The best thing to do is talk to your child and provide them with encouragement and positivity and get them excited about the audition process. This can help them enjoy the auditions and look forward to future call-backs or other roles.

It is important to us as Audition Coaches that the kids are comfortable with the audition process. It can be scary for them, especially if they are just starting in the industry. Therefore, we encourage all parents to prioritize open communication when preparing for auditions. 2. Learning Lines

Of course, one obvious way you need to prepare for an audition is to rehearse their lines and help them feel confident in their ability to recall their words on cue.

Although this may seem like the most challenging part of the auditioning process, there are a few ways to relieve some of the nervousness surrounding forgetting their lines.

Most children respond well to practicing little and often. Revising lines can be seen as another chore even if they desire to work in the industry. Therefore, working on their lines a few times a day for just 5-10 minutes per session is a great way to reduce the friction of starting a task. Not only can short revision times help children pay attention but going over their lines more frequently can also improve their recall. Revising frequently can also improve their confidence, which can help them reduce anxiety before the audition and focus on their acting skills.

3. Practice in Front of Others

After a few line learning sessions, it can help to allow your child to practice the scene in front of others, such as family members or friends.

Practicing in front of an audience your child already trusts can help them become more confident about their audition and reduce the embarrassment of acting or singing in public. However, it’s imperative that the child feels supported and encouraged by the people they perform to as a negative experience could worsen their anxiety.

If you don’t have anyone to practice with, you could also set up your camera or phone to record them to help them get used to performing with a viewer. This is also helpful as they can watch their practice audition and see how their movement comes across on camera.

You may have heard that casting directors prefer kids who act naturally in front of the camera. This is because the directors were kids who can bring a sense of authenticity and personality to the role. However, this doesn’t mean that they want a child who is underprepared or unconfident. They are looking for a balance between a confident and a well-prepared child who can bring the role alive.

4. What to Bring to the Audition

Preparing for an audition involves practicing for the performance. But you also need to do other things to prepare for the noteworthy day.

First, it’s important to ensure your child’s needs are met. For example, ensure they have a decent breakfast, preferable a long-lasting energy breakfast such as protein and a good night’s sleep the night before.

You will then need to arrange the materials required for the audition. Your agent (if you have one) should be able to provide you with a list of things the casting director requires, or you can use this list to check off the most commonly needed items for an audition:

● Snacks.

● Water.

● Headshots.

● Resume of previous performances and experience.

● Something to keep your child’s mind occupied while they wait or during travel to the audition. Bringing homework, books, or quiet games can help your child feel more relaxed and distract them before the audition, so they do not overthink the process.

● Any instruments they play or copies of the music they need.

Whether they are superstars or shining stars, singers need to keep their voices as healthy as possible especially when you have an audition or a performance. Vocal health is the precious gift a singer can have that keeps on giving, and when singers are going through some vocal health disorders, it is tough for them to sing properly. You can perform specific exercises and here are some tips and hacks you can use to keep your voice peaceful and melodious. I have short-listed some of the best tips and hacks for you to keep your voice healthy before a performance or an audition.

11 Tips for Good Vocal Health

Nothing else matters when your voice refuses to cooperate! Professional voice-over artists know that specific preparations must be made before a performance. These pointers are helpful for all vocalists and ensuring that you present the most outstanding possible performance/audition. They are:

Tip#1: Get a Good Night Sleep Before a Performance or Audition

Your voice gets healthy and rested during your off times, so make sure to get enough peaceful sleep before your performance. In order to achieve this, the best step you can take is to avoid your mobile phone and if possible put it in another room, use black curtains to blackout lights so you can have a peaceful nights sleep. This will reduce your mental stress giving your voice rest and void of any stress.

Tip#2: Hydrate Yourself

It is necessary to hydrate your vocal cords, especially before a performance. You can drink a decent amount of water 1 hour before a performance. This will maximize the chances of an outstanding performance with hydrated vocal chords as well as it will make your vocal cords more elastic. You can also take some caffeine-free tea like chamomile or ginger or any foods containing water.

Tip #3 Pamper Your Voice

Pampering your voice means protecting it like opera singers do when they spend a whole day without speaking before their performance. You have to make sure to avoid situations that cause your vocal cords to be stressed, which means you have to avoid screaming or doing unnecessary talking before your performance or audition.

Tip #4: Warming Up

Warming up your voice is as necessary as providing gas to your car or electricity for an appliance. When your vocal cords are hydrated, it is much easier to warm up your voice. There are many exercises which will help you to warm up your voice. Vocal exercises cause the acid in the muscles around your vocal cords to break down, allowing the tendon in your throat to stretch and improve your vocal production. Other than this, the best way to warm up your voice is by humming. Tip #5: Personal Humidifier

Perhaps you live in a cold or dry region? In this case, having a personal humidifier is like saving not only your performance but you. A humidifier keeps your vocal cords at ease from drying. You can use a humidifier before warming up to moisturize your throat.

Tip #6: Diet

A healthy diet is not only good for your body but for your voice too. A healthy diet provides elasticity to your vocal folds. Avoid pasta or dairy products and chocolates before your session as they will dry out your voice. Use fruits containing water so they can hydrate your body and give your voice proper hydration as mentioned previously. Try to avoid meals before going to bed or 2-3 hours before your audition or performance. Water (particularly room-temperature water with a touch of lemon) and tea are the finest liquids for your singing voice, but be cautious not to overdo it on the caffeine, which might dehydrate you. Excellent herbal teas for vocalists are available and are ideal.

Tip #7: Your Breath

Activate your breath by doing breath relaxation exercises. Start taking a few normal breaths, and when you breathe, be conscious of your body and adjust it as necessary for singing. Use these tips below:

• Keep your shoulders and chest in mind.

• Make sure they're comfortable and at a low level.

• Make sure your breaths go into your lower abdomen instead of your chest. Placing your hand on your lower abdomen and making sure it rises and falls as you breathe can assist.

• Make an "S" sound as you exhale to warm up your vocal cords.

• Repeat as many times as necessary until you feel you're breathing slowly, deeply, and steadily.

Tip #8: Exercises

Do tongue trills or other lip exercises as a warm-up before starting to sing. You can also do some scales during your tongue exercises. Make some raspberry sounds by releasing air.

Tip #9: Cool Yourself Down

Even after warming-up or exercising your voice, do not forget to cool yourself down. Using 'm' for humming and slightly vibrate your lips is great for this.

Tip #10: Don't Sing From the Throat

Even after doing everything and preparing your vocal cords, you must think about where your voice is coming from and not use your throat for signing. Instead, sing from your core which will relax your vocal cords and let your voice resonate in your chest.

Tip #11: Don't Push Yourself to Sing

If your vocal cords are hurting, do not push yourself to sing. I repeat, do not push yourself to sing. This could lead you to temporarily lose your voice as well damage your voice. Give yourself a little time to regain energy and rest before singing Again. This will increase your chances of a great performance or audition and is suitable for keeping your vocal cords healthy not just for when you need it but for a lifetime!

Confidence is one of the greatest gifts you can offer your children. It can increase their happiness, health, and confidence even plays a vital role in academic achievement. Meaning that building confidence in your child is important for the short-term and instilling a sense of good self-esteem can set them up for success later in life.

After coaching hundreds of children in our performing arts school, we have seen firsthand how well confident children handle negative experiences, how they approach novel situations with a sense of passion, and how they can regulate their emotions and overcome challenges.

Here are our top ten tips for helping children grow their confidence over time.

10 Tips for Building Confidence in Children

1. Be Confident Yourself

Kids learn through observation , so an effective way to show them how to build confidence is to display it as parents. This means you need to be self-aware and notice when you are showing your child anxious or nervous behaviors, or actively avoid situations. Even if you don’t feel confident on the inside, try your best to act self-assured when in front of your kids and put yourself in novel situations, so they learn through watching you how to react with confidence.

You don’t have to be the ‘perfect parent’ and never show nervousness, just do your best to highlight confidence and allow them to have a positive role model in their life.

2. Don’t Dwell on Mistakes

Everyone slips up from time to time, and learning to suck at something is part of growing in confidence. However, do your best as their leader to acknowledge mistakes and then work through them as a team. Allow them to uncover the skills that can help them push through the fear of failure and keep trying.

Sometimes confidence isn’t about being the best. It’s about being resilient and trying again, even when you feel like throwing in the towel and calling it a day.

At the end of the day, every child wants to feel loved and supported by their family. So do whatever you can to emphasize how loved and appreciated they are even when things seem to go belly up. Feeling like they have their parents behind them can help them grow into confident young adults.

Crossing the boundaries between enjoying performing as a hobby and pursuing acting or music in a professional capacity can be challenging. However, if you and your child are dedicated to putting in the work to find and work with a talent agent, it can be worth it. Seeing your child pursue their dreams is something every parent dreams of, so here is our expert advice when it comes to finding a legitimate talent agent for your children.

What Factors to Consider When You Look for a Talent Agent

1. Size of the Agency

Firstly, you may wish to consider the agency’s size, as there are pros and cons to both small or more significant agencies.

Large agencies will likely have more connections. Therefore, they offer more opportunities for discovery and could be able to send your child for more auditions. However, with this increase in business size comes, you guessed it, more children and other talent on their books competing for these auditions.

One way to decide if an agent is likely to recommend your child over the other ones on their books is to look through the children they have already signed with. If your child is unique in appearance or their skills compared to others on their roster, it is more likely that they will be put forward for auditions. But, saying this, there is never a guarantee with any agent of any size.

2. Agency Specialities

You may also wish to consider what type of roles the agent can offer your child. For example, if one agent specializes in film and another in theater, then you may wish to consider this as a deciding factor depending on your child’s strengths, talents, and interests.

3. Avoid Scams

Without putting you off the process of signing with an agent, be prepared to do your due diligence to avoid working with a non-legitimate agent.

One way to avoid scams is to ask the agent if they are members of a talent agent association, such as SAG or the Association of Talent Agents . Being a member of these groups means they are governed by certain rules and, therefore, legitimate.

If an agent is attempting to make you pay a fee to audition, or asks you in any way to financially contribute to the promotion of your child within the agency, run as fast as you can! The talent agents will never ask you to pay for their services upfront. Instead, they make their income through commission once your child secures a job.

Where to Find Talent Agents

1. Network, Network, Network

Many people find more success finding a talent agent if they can obtain a recommendation from a casting director or a classmate's parent. Not only can this help you avoid being scammed, but you are more likely to be able to get your foot in the door by a referral from someone who has a personal connection with the agency.

Additionally, it doesn’t help to mention that you are searching for an agent wherever you can. Obviously, you don’t want to alienate everyone you come across or sound like a broken record in conversation, but when the opportunity arises and you have a chance to speak to someone in the business, ask questions, and request references. Networking can be just as key as your child's innate talent at securing them an agent.

2. The Internet is Your Best Friend

In 2022, when we have a question about something, we tend to turn to Google for answers. And why should finding an agent be any different? Of course, you have to keep your wits about you and detect potential scams, but for the most part, you should be able to at least come up with a few starting points using an internet search.

3. Participate in Events

Participating in local or state-run events is a great practical experience. It can give your kids an opportunity to be seen by Talent Scouts and Talent Agents as well as other professionals in the industry. This can also help you in your networking endeavors!

Top Tips for Finding Talent Agents

1. Get Professional Headshots Taken

Actors will rarely book a job unless they have professional portrait headshots taken, and the same goes for child performers. So if your child is ten years old or older, then this should be top of your to-do list before finding an agent. Not only will having professional headshots help your child look more serious to a potential agent, but they will likely need headshots when they book their first agent to send to casting agents.

Headshots typically cost between $150 to $450. However, there is always an option to shop around or go with a more affordable student photographer.

2. Talk to Other Parents who Have Been in your Shoes

There is only so much information we can fit into a blog post, so chatting to other parents who are in your situation or have been through the process of finding an agent for their child can be invaluable.

3. Don’t Give up!

Consistency is key. As tiresome as finding an agent is, you can’t lose hope. There are many cases where actors have had to go through several 100's of agents to find one that works for them. So if you feel bombarded by letters turning you down, you just have to stay positive that you could be just one away from signing an agent.

How to Motivate an Unmotivated Child to Practice

Why is motivating children so challenging? As a parent, we know your heart is in the right place, and you want to instill a sense of purpose and drive in your child so they can succeed as young adults in the workplace. But getting them motivated to practice their craft outside of lessons can feel like trying to draw blood from a stone. You feel exhausted from the arguments and at a loss about how to begin getting them to pick up their instrument or script to practice willingly.

If you can relate to these feelings of hopelessness when trying to motivate your kids, this article should give you some starting points in improving your child’s motivation.

Why is Your Child Unmotivated?

First things first, you need to uncover why your child is unmotivated to practice at home. When you recognize the reasons for their behavior it should become much easier to know where to focus your efforts to encourage them to practice.

Common reasons for unmotivated children include:

● The task is not age-appropriate.

● They are bored of the monotony of repetition.

● They are instead motivated by resistance in an attempt to take back control of the situation.

● They have not yet experienced the negative consequences associated with not practicing. Therefore, they are simply unaware of how they will feel when they have not practiced.

● There may be other things that are distracting them from practicing.

6 Ways to Motivate Disinterested Children

1. Let Them Try a New Skill

Not all children have the same interests, and it may be that your child is simply not interested in the specific instrument or skill in which they are enrolled. If you think this may be the case, you can discuss it with your child’s instructor to consider whether it may help to move them into learning a new skill or trying a different class to see if this piques their interest.

2. Redefine the Goals

Firstly, setting goals should invariably involve your child. If you set their goals for them and then dictate for them when and how they should reach their goals, you’re practically loading them onto a train headed straight for burnout and disinterest.

Instead, try and sit down with them or use the time you travel together to class to discuss where they see themselves taking their skills in the next six months to one year and work as a team to plan how they can achieve their goals. Even if you think they could achieve more with a little more persistence, the first step is to motivate the child and re-energize them about participating in their practices. Then you can look at encouraging them to take things to the next level. After all, slow progress is better than no progress.

Of course, there will be exceptions, especially if your child is one of the younger ones at our school, but generally, giving children input can lead to improved motivation to practice.

3. Lay Low for a While

If you tend to nag when you’re frustrated (don’t worry, we’ve all been that parent at one point), maybe it’s time to just lay low for a week or two to reset. Sometimes children can become desensitized to listening to a parent tell them to practice.

We recognize that you may worry about them being told off for not practicing or feel as though you are paying for a wasted lesson. However, sometimes the best motivation has to come from within, and you may find your child learns motivation the hard way through experiencing what the consequences will be if they don’t pracice.

4. Break an Overwhelming Task into Chunks

Overwhelming feelings is something many more children have been experiencing since the Pandemic. As children growing up in a world full of uncertainty, they are not immune to feeling the psychological impacts of the stress caused by a substantial worldwide disruption. Therefore, it may be that their brain does not understand their emotions, and responding to being asked to practice may be the tip of the iceberg. Consequently, it is essential to recognize if your child may be experiencing anxiety and how you can work with them and their teachers to ease them back into practicing without feeling overwhelmed by the task.

5. Consider if the Task is Challenging Enough

Perhaps it may be the case that the task of practicing isn’t overwhelming but rather too easy for your child. If your child is naturally smart, they may pick up their instrument, or the principals taught in acting classes quickly. Therefore, it is likely they could feel bored by the idea of practicing. Additionally, a talented child is less likely to feel the natural negative consequences of not practicing, such as embarrassment when performing something they haven’t practiced.

Therefore, it is important to keep your child stimulated in their extracurricular activities to ensure they are continually motivated by the task.

6. Find Their Motivation

Everyone is different, and what motivates you may not work for your child. The same goes for siblings. Just because your other child thrives off completing their practice homework as soon as they can, doesn’t mean their sibling will be the same.

It's important not to press your preconceived ideas about what induces motivation in your child. Instead, spend time understanding what makes them tick and use this knowledge to your advantage.

For example, some children are naturally motivated to succeed to show off their new skills to their parents or friends. However, some shy children may dread the idea that if they become better at their instrument, they may have to perform in front of visiting family members. Therefore, this child may need more subtle forms of motivation or a more reward-based approach.

This allows them the chance to assess a new situation and use their investigation skills to make appropriate judgments that can enable them to thrive.

One way to help aid your child’s development of problem-solving and decision-making skills is to register them for music lessons or a group arts class. Music can thicken the decision-making areas of a child’s brain, known as the cortex , while participating in group activities may help them develop reasoning skills and teamwork. However, sometimes the best thing a shy child can learn is that it is ok to make ‘mistakes’. The performing arts, in our opinion, are one of the greatest ways they can learn this valuable life lesson.

When Should a Shy Child NOT Participate in the Performing Arts?

As research has shown, children taking music lessons are more likely to be successful in school, less likely to suffer from attention deficit disorders, and have better mental health. This blog post will explore five critical benefits of music lessons for children and how they can improve different aspects of their lives.

1) Better Math and Reading Skills

One of the main benefits of music instruction is that it helps children improve their math and reading skills. A 2019 study by the American Psychological Association (APA) found that children who had music lessons scored higher on standardized tests in math, reading and other subjects, even after controlling for other variables such as socioeconomic status and parental education. The large sample size and rigorous control of variables make this study particularly noteworthy: more than 112,000 primary and secondary student records were examined in British Columbia, Canada.

"Students who participated in music, who had higher achievement in music, and who were highly engaged in music had higher exam scores across all subjects, while these associations were more pronounced for those who took instrumental music rather than vocal music," said Peter GouzouaPh.D., Ph.D., one of the study's authors.

In a group setting, this can help children learn to cooperate and work together harmoniously towards a common goal. There's also evidence that music instruction can improve children's communication skills, especially their ability to express themselves verbally and use language to persuade others. Described as a specific type of social anxiety by Psychology Today, stage fright can happen days or weeks in advance or appear suddenly and unexpectedly at the time of performance. Regardless of the timing or the severity of the symptoms, the emotional and psychological impact of stage fright can feel overwhelming to children and leave parents heartbroken, stress-ridden, and eager to find solutions. Stage fright can be devastating to those experiencing it and even more so for parents who want nothing more than to help their child overcome this hurdle on their path to success.

How to Help Your Child Overcome Stage Fright

The good news is that when acknowledged and addressed, stage fright usually only lasts for a short time during the first few performances of any given production. Although common, it can be pretty nerve-wracking for both children and parents. The best way to help a child overcome stage fright is by providing them with the tools they need to manage their anxiety. The following tips are based on expert advice and have been proven to be effective in helping children of all ages deal with stage fright:

How the Power of Words Changed a Student's Life

TRUE STORY (The Power of Words)

So one particular day I didn’t have my car and I needed to take the Lopez Studios Company Van overnight as my transportation. As I headed to work the next morning in the van I hear what sounds like the car behind me blowing its horn at me non-stop. I looked to my left and right then looked in my rear-view mirror to see if the car blowing the horn was in fact blowing at me. In the rear view mirror I see what appears to be a gentleman pointing his finger at the van as if to get my attention. The car was then able to pull to the left of the company van and as the car pulled up closer to me the gentleman yells out the passenger window for me to pull over. I had no idea what was happening but I assumed that the man in the car was not a police officer based on the car, no flashing lights, and no uniform.

AGAINST MY BETTER JUDGEMENT (The Power of Words)

Against my better judgement, I decided to pull over in a parking lot with plenty of open stores as I had no idea what I was getting myself into. The gentleman followed me to the parking lot and once we were both parked he got out of his car and came to my driver’s side window and says “Mr. Lopez, do you remember me?" I looked really closely and could not make out who he was although he did look familiar. He was a gentleman maybe in his 60’s, casually dressed but very pleasant with a great smile. I responded and said “I’m not sure I do”! He then proceeds to tell me that he recognized the Lopez Studios van and was hoping I was the one driving (which is usually NOT the case). He continues and says “I have been wanting to contact you for years and when I saw your company van I knew I had to see if it was you. Well, you taught my son many years ago and I have to tell you a story you probably won’t remember. One particular day my son came to piano lessons feeling defeated, discouraged and broken and felt he was not good at anything including the piano. You immediately stopped the lesson and told my son that the lesson was over and you proceeded to close all the piano books, got up from the piano and went to your desk. Needless to say he thought he had upset you and began to tear up a bit."

THEN THERE WERE TEARS (The Power of Words)

He continued, "You told my son to have a seat and to look directly at you. You grabbed his hand, looked him in the eyes and told him he was not only good at piano but he was good at many things he should be proud of. You told him that you thought he had charisma, he was articulate, he was smart and in your opinion you thought he would make an excellent lawyer.” As the gentleman continued the story tears began to fill his eyes as he said “I need to tell you that my son has just graduated from Law School and is now a working lawyer. He still remembers your words and never forgot them nor you to this day!” At this point I got out of the van with tears in my eyes and told him that he had made my day and gave him a big hug. Two men in a parking lot crying and hugging! What a scene! �� Although I did now remember the student, I did not remember the incident having taught so many students over the years.
