Finding Your Spotlight: 10 Underrated

Performing Arts Colleges for Aspiring Students

By Victor Lopez

For years, I've had the privilege of coaching incredibly talented students, helping them prepare for their college auditions and next steps in education. When it comes to finding the perfect school, a lot of attention goes to the same handful of elite programs. But as a coach that has prepared many students for college entrance in the performing arts, I'm here to tell you that some of the most innovative and rewarding training happens at institutions you might not have heard of.

This list is for any student—and their parents—who is searching for top-tier performing arts degrees in music, theatre, and dance. Let's explore some true hidden gems that offer outstanding education, often with a more focused and supportive environment.

1. Roosevelt University (Chicago, IL)

  • Specialty: Socially Conscious Art-Making.
  • Why It's Underrated: Located in the heart of Chicago's bustling theatre and music scene, it's often overshadowed by larger, more publicized universities. However, its Chicago College of Performing Arts (CCPA) is a true powerhouse, offering a hands-on, conservatory-style education with a strong emphasis on using art for social change.
  • Programs: The CCPA offers a wide range of undergraduate and graduate programs, including degrees in Music (Performance, Composition, Music Education, Music Therapy), Theatre (Acting, Musical Theatre, Directing, Playwriting, Theatre Technology and Design), and Dance.

2. Shenandoah Conservatory (Winchester, VA)

  • Specialty: Interdisciplinary and Innovative Performance Training.
  • Why It's Underrated: Despite being a highly-ranked conservatory, its location in a smaller town means it may not have the same immediate national recognition as schools in major metropolitan areas. This is a huge advantage, as it creates a close-knit community with a focus on student growth.
  • Programs: Offers a comprehensive suite of undergraduate and graduate programs in Music (instrumental, vocal, jazz, contemporary commercial music, music therapy), Theatre (acting, musical theatre, directing, design and production), and Dance.

3. Baldwin Wallace University (Berea, OH)

  • Specialty: Premier Music Theatre and Acting Programs with Direct Professional Connections.
  • Why It's Underrated: While widely respected in the industry, it's still considered a "hidden gem" to many outside of professional circles. Its unparalleled success in placing students on Broadway is proof of its exceptional training.
  • Programs: Its music theatre and acting programs are renowned. The school also offers strong degrees in directing, design and technology, and various other music disciplines.

4. Oklahoma City University (Oklahoma City, OK)

  • Specialty: Historically Strong in Vocal Performance and Opera.
  • Why It's Underrated: OCU’s Bass School of Music is a vocal training mecca that consistently produces top talent. It may be geographically located in a less prominent arts hub, but its reputation for vocal excellence is second to none.
  • Programs: The Bass School of Music is highly regarded, offering degrees in Vocal Performance, Instrumental Performance, Composition, Music Theatre, and Dance.

5. Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY)

  • Specialty: A Diverse Range of Performing Arts Programs within a Top-Tier Research University.
  • Why It's Underrated: Because it's a large university, its performing arts programs can sometimes be overlooked by those searching specifically for a conservatory. However, the Department of Drama and Setnor School of Music are exceptional and provide students with a well-rounded education.
  • Programs: The College of Visual and Performing Arts offers BFA programs in Acting, Musical Theater, Stage Management, and Design/Technical Theater. The Setnor School of Music provides an extensive list of music degrees.

6. Elon University (Elon, NC)

  • Specialty: Comprehensive Performing Arts Training with an Emphasis on Undergraduate Research and Experiential Learning.
  • Why It's Underrated: While gaining more recognition, it is a newer name in the national performing arts scene compared to older, more established conservatories. Its emphasis on career readiness and real-world experience sets it apart.
  • Programs: Offers BFA programs in Acting, Music Theatre, and Dance Performance, as well as BA programs in Dramatic Arts and Music.

7. University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) (Cincinnati, OH)

  • Specialty: Highly Intensive and Professional Training Across All Disciplines.
  • Why It's Underrated: While well-regarded within the industry, it doesn't have the broad public name recognition of conservatories in New York or Los Angeles, making it a fantastic and competitive option for those in the know.
  • Programs: CCM is an elite conservatory offering a vast array of undergraduate and graduate programs in Music, Theatre (Acting, Musical Theatre, Technical Theatre and Design), and Dance.

8. Webster University (St. Louis, MO)

  • Specialty: Strong Conservatory-Style Training within a Liberal Arts Framework.
  • Why It's Underrated: Can be overshadowed by larger state universities in the Midwest, but its Conservatory of Theatre Arts provides a rigorous, professional education. The balance of a conservatory experience with a full university's resources is a major plus.
  • Programs: The Conservatory of Theatre Arts offers BFA programs in Acting, Musical Theatre, Stage Management, Costume Design, Lighting Design, Scenic Design, and Sound Design. The Department of Music also offers various degrees.

9. DePauw University (Greencastle, IN)

  • Specialty: Excellent Music Program within a Strong Liberal Arts Setting.
  • Why It's Underrated: Its rural location might lead some to believe it’s not a serious contender, but its School of Music is a hidden gem. It offers students a liberal arts education while providing top-tier, conservatory-level music training.
  • Programs: The School of Music offers degrees in Performance, Composition, Music Education, and Music Business. Students can also pursue interdisciplinary study with theatre and dance.

10. Montclair State University (Montclair, NJ)

  • Specialty: Outstanding Performing Arts Programs with Close Proximity to NYC.
  • Why It's Underrated: Often considered a regional school, Montclair’s location just outside of New York City provides unparalleled access to professional opportunities, internships, and a faculty with direct industry experience. This is a huge advantage for students looking to work professionally after graduation.
  • Programs: The Department of Theatre and Dance offers BFA programs in Acting, Musical Theatre, Production and Design, and Dance. The John J. Cali School of Music offers a wide range of music degrees.
