The Top 10 Performing Arts Colleges and Universities:
Finding Your Spotlight, and Knowing When to Look Elsewhere
by Victor Lopez
After 30 years as a vocal coach and the founder of Lopez Studios Inc., I've seen it all. I’ve seen students with natural-born talent and others who have worked tirelessly to achieve their goals. I still remember one student, years ago, who was convinced the only place for her was Juilliard. She’d practiced her audition piece a thousand times, and when the day came, she was a nervous wreck. She didn’t get in, and for a moment, it felt like her world ended. But a few weeks later, she landed a spot at Carnegie Mellon. She flourished, finding a community that was a perfect fit for her. She went on to have a fantastic career.
This list of the top performing arts colleges is my honest opinion, forged from three decades of hands-on experience and a deep understanding of what it takes to succeed. It’s based on the five metrics that matter most to me as a professional: industry reputation, the success of their alumni, the excellence of their faculty, the depth of their program specializations, and the amount of hands-on, practical experience they offer. For every parent and every student reading this, please know that this is a tool to help you start your journey, not the final word. The right college is a place where a student can truly soar, where their passion is nurtured, and their potential is unleashed.
1. Juilliard School (New York, NY)
- Programs and Majors: Juilliard offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in Dance, Drama (Acting and Playwriting), and Music (classical, jazz, historical performance, and vocal arts). They provide a highly specialized curriculum with a focus on core performance.
- Alumni Network & Career Support: The Alan D. Marks Center provides lifelong career services to students and alumni, including one-on-one counseling and an online portal for opportunities. The alumni network, known as Juilliard Connect, is a robust platform for networking and job opportunities.
- Best Fit: Your students who are exceptionally driven, highly disciplined, and aspire to be at the very top of their field. They thrive under intense pressure and are ready to dedicate their lives to their art.
- Not a Best Fit: Students who desire a broad liberal arts education or a relaxed college experience. The intense, conservatory-style training and demanding schedule leave little time for anything else.
2. Yale School of Drama (New Haven, CT)
- Programs and Majors: Yale School of Drama primarily offers graduate degrees (MFA and DFA) and a certificate program. Their majors include Acting, Design, Directing, Playwriting, Stage Management, and Technical Design and Production. They also offer a strong undergraduate drama major through Yale College.
- Alumni Network & Career Support: Yale's network is one of the most powerful in the world. The alumni association and career office provide a wealth of resources, and the professional Yale Repertory Theatre offers a direct path to professional work.
- Best Fit: Students with a profound intellectual curiosity for theater, who are not just performers but also thinkers, creators, and leaders. Ideal for those who envision a career that combines artistry with a deep understanding of the craft.
- Not a Best Fit: Students who are seeking a traditional undergraduate BFA program with a heavy performance focus. Yale's School of Drama is a highly selective, and intensely rigorous, graduate-level program. Undergraduates will find their opportunities more limited compared to a dedicated BFA program.
3. Carnegie Mellon University - School of Drama (Pittsburgh, PA)
- Programs and Majors: Carnegie Mellon offers BFA and MFA programs with majors in Acting, Musical Theater, Directing, and specialized design and production fields such as Costume Design, Lighting Design, and Stage & Production Management.
- Alumni Network & Career Support: Carnegie Mellon has a highly engaged and extensive alumni network. The university's Career and Professional Development Center provides resources for alumni, and the "Tartan Networks" offer mentorship and networking opportunities with graduates in the industry.
- Best Fit: Students who desire rigorous, conservatory training but also appreciate the broader academic environment of a university. Perfect for those who are serious about a career in theater or film and want a comprehensive skill set.
- Not a Best Fit: Students who struggle with time management and discipline. The program's demands on time and energy are immense, and a student who isn't ready for a non-stop, intense schedule may quickly feel overwhelmed.
4. University of Southern California (USC) - School of Dramatic Arts / Thornton School of Music (Los Angeles, CA)
- Programs and Majors: The School of Dramatic Arts offers BFA majors in Acting for Stage and Screen, Musical Theatre, and various design and production fields. The Thornton School of Music has an expansive list of majors including Vocal Arts & Opera, Popular Music, Jazz Studies, and Music Industry.
- Alumni Network & Career Support: USC boasts the only dedicated Professional Development Center at a dramatic arts school in the nation. It provides students and recent graduates with self-tape resources, free headshots, industry mentorship, and direct connections to Hollywood.
- Best Fit: Your students who dream of a career in film, television, or the commercial music industry, as well as traditional theater. They are ambitious, adaptable, and eager to leverage industry connections.
- Not a Best Fit: Students who are seeking a small, intimate, conservatory feel. USC is a large, vibrant, and sprawling university, and a student who needs a close-knit, protected environment might get lost in the crowd.
5. New York University (NYU) - Tisch School of the Arts (New York, NY)
- Programs and Majors: Tisch offers a wide array of programs including Acting, Dance, Design for Stage & Film, and Musical Theatre Writing. The school's unique studio system allows for a personalized path within each of its departments.
- Alumni Network & Career Support: With a massive alumni base in New York and Los Angeles, NYU's Tisch Office of Career Development provides career coaching, workshops, and access to the "NYU Violet Network," which connects students and alumni for mentoring and networking.
- Best Fit: Creative, independent, and experimental students who want to explore different artistic avenues. Ideal for those who thrive in a vibrant, diverse, and often cutting-edge artistic community in one of the world's greatest cities.
- Not a Best Fit: Students who prefer a traditional, singular acting or musical theater method. Tisch's studio system is built on exploration, and a student who wants one specific training style from day one may find the process frustrating.
6. Boston Conservatory at Berklee (Boston, MA)
- Programs and Majors: Boston Conservatory offers highly selective BFA programs in Musical Theater, Contemporary Dance, and Contemporary Theater. The Music Division provides Bachelor of Music (BM) degrees in Composition and Instrumental Performance, and Voice Performance with an optional emphasis on opera.
- Alumni Network & Career Support: The Berklee Career Center provides professional development opportunities, including career advising, a mentor network, and a job portal. Students and alumni have access to networking events and industry trips to help them build their professional careers.
- Best Fit: Your musical theater triple-threats, classical musicians, and serious dancers who want a deeply immersive, conservatory experience. Students who are ready to dedicate themselves fully to their craft in a supportive but demanding environment.
- Not a Best Fit: Students who are looking for a broad liberal arts curriculum or a traditional college campus feel. The curriculum is singularly focused on the arts, and the school lacks the Greek life or large sports culture of a typical university.
7. Northwestern University - School of Communication (Evanston, IL)
- Programs and Majors: Northwestern offers a liberal arts-based approach with majors in Theatre, Dance, and Radio/Television/Film. The Music Theatre Certificate provides a specialized focus for students who want to combine a university education with a strong musical theater foundation.
- Alumni Network & Career Support: The university's Career Advancement office provides lifelong access to job postings and career events. The Northwestern Alumni Association offers a powerful network for graduates to connect with professionals and mentors in every industry, including entertainment.
- Best Fit: Students who want a well-rounded university experience with a top-tier performing arts education. They are intellectually curious and want to combine their artistic passion with academic rigor and critical thinking.
- Not a Best Fit: Students who are seeking a true conservatory-only experience. The academic requirements are substantial, and the artistic training is not as singular or as insulated as it would be at a dedicated conservatory.
8. University of Michigan - School of Music, Theatre & Dance (Ann Arbor, MI)
- Programs and Majors: This school offers a wide variety of degrees including BFA in Musical Theatre and Theatre Performance (Acting, Directing, and Design & Production). It also offers BM and MM degrees in Music (Composition, Jazz Studies, Voice & Opera, and various instrumental performances) and a BFA in Dance.
- Alumni Network & Career Support: The EXCEL Lab is the school's hub for performing arts entrepreneurship and career services, offering one-on-one coaching, workshops, and project funding. The school's extensive and loyal alumni network is highly supportive of graduates, with strong connections in New York and on Broadway.
- Best Fit: Students who desire a highly competitive and practical training experience, especially in musical theater. They thrive in a vibrant campus community and appreciate a strong alumni network.
- Not a Best Fit: Students who prefer a smaller, more intimate college experience. The University of Michigan is a very large state school, and some students may find the sheer size of the campus and the student body overwhelming.
9. DePaul University - The Theatre School (Chicago, IL)
- Programs and Majors: The Theatre School offers a range of BFA and MFA majors across three departments: Performance (Acting and Comedy Arts), Design/Technology (Costume Design, Lighting Design, Sound Design, and more), and Theatre Studies (Dramaturgy/Criticism, Playwriting, and Theatre Management).
- Alumni Network & Career Support: Students at DePaul benefit from the school's long-standing reputation and direct connections to the Chicago theater scene. The school has a dedicated Alumni Relations Director, and advanced students have the opportunity for internships at prestigious local and national organizations.
- Best Fit: The ideal student for DePaul's Theatre School is someone who is ready for an intensive, high-paced conservatory experience and thrives on practical application and collaboration. They should be passionate about the art form and eager to fully immerse themselves in a demanding, professional environment from day one.
- Not a Best Fit: Students who are primarily focused on film and television acting. While some on-camera classes are offered, the core of the curriculum is heavily weighted toward live theater.
10. University of North Carolina School of the Arts (UNCSA) (Winston-Salem, NC)
- Programs and Majors: UNCSA is divided into five arts schools: Drama, Filmmaking, Dance, Music, and Design and Production. This unique structure allows students to pursue focused BFA and MFA degrees while collaborating with artists in different fields.
- Alumni Network & Career Support: UNCSA’s alumni are well-connected in major entertainment hubs, particularly in filmmaking and dance. The school provides strong industry connections and a wide network of graduates working at all levels in studios, agencies, and theater companies across the country.
- Best Fit: A student who will do best at UNCSA is a passionate, driven artist who wants to train in a focused, pre-professional environment. They should be excited by the idea of collaborating with students from different disciplines and are looking for a community that is deeply committed to the arts.
- Not a Best Fit: Students who prioritize a strong liberal arts education alongside their artistic training. UNCSA is a conservatory first and foremost, and academics, while present, are secondary to the intensive art-focused curriculum.
