A Broadway Dream: Your Guide

to a First Broadway Audition

As a vocal coach and founder of Lopez Studios, Inc. Performing Arts School, I’m thrilled you’re taking this exciting step towards a Broadway audition. This guide is for both young performers and their supportive parents, offering a clear path through the process. Let’s break it down:

Step 1: Selecting Your Material - Finding Your Spark Choosing the right song and monologue is crucial.

 * Songs: Pick one or two contrasting 16-32 bar cuts that showcase your vocal range and acting ability. Think about shows and characters you connect with. Avoid overly popular or technically challenging pieces for now. Your vocal coach can offer excellent suggestions!

 * Monologues: Select a short, age-appropriate monologue (about one minute) from a published play. It should reveal your personality and understanding of the character. Again, your acting coach can guide you.

 * Sheet Music: Ensure your sheet music is in the correct key, clearly marked with your cuts, and in a binder for the accompanist.

Step 2: Pre-Audition Preparation - Practice Makes Prepared Thorough preparation builds confidence.

 * Vocal Practice: Warm up your voice daily. Practice your song with the accompaniment until it feels natural. Focus on clear diction and storytelling.

 * Acting Practice: Memorize your monologue completely. Understand your character's motivations and intentions. Rehearse in front of a mirror or family members.

 * Dance (if required): If the audition calls for dance, attend classes and practice the combinations provided. Wear appropriate dance attire.

 * Research: Learn about the show you’re auditioning for. Knowing the plot and characters can inform your choices.

 * Rest and Hydration: Get plenty of sleep and drink lots of water in the days leading up to the audition.

Step 3: Arriving at the Audition - What to Expect Knowing the process can ease nerves.

 * Punctuality: Arrive at least 30 minutes early to find parking, check in, and use the restroom.

 * Check-In: Locate the sign-in table. You’ll likely provide your name and the roles you’re auditioning for.

 * Waiting Area: Be respectful and quiet in the waiting area. This is not the time for loud conversations or running around.

 * Order: Pay attention to how they are calling people in. It might be alphabetical or a list posted.

Step 4: The Audition - Show Your Talent- This is your moment to shine!

 * Entering the Room: Enter with a smile and confidence. Introduce yourself clearly and state what you will be performing.

 * Slating: You might be asked to “slate” – state your name. Sometimes they’ll ask for your height or age.

 * Singing: Hand your sheet music to the accompanist. Be ready to start when they are. Make eye contact with the panel. Focus on your performance and telling the story of the song.

 * Acting: Take a moment before you begin your monologue to get into character. Speak clearly and project your voice.

 * Dance: If there’s a dance call, pay close attention to the choreographer’s instructions. Do your best and don’t be discouraged if you don’t get every step perfect.

 * Be Polite: Thank the panel when you are finished.

Step 5: After the Audition - Patience and Positivity The audition is just one part of the journey.

 * Thank You Note (Optional): A brief thank-you note to the casting director can be a nice touch, but it’s not always necessary, especially for young performers' first auditions.

 * Don't Dwell: Once you’ve auditioned, try not to overthink it. The casting team has many factors to consider.

 * Continue Training: Whether or not you get this role, keep working on your skills at Lopez Studios! Every audition is a learning experience.

 * Patience: The casting process can take time. Don't be discouraged if you don't hear back immediately.

Your first Broadway audition is a significant achievement. Enjoy the experience, be yourself, and know that your hard work and dedication are what truly matter.
