The Secret Battle: What All Performers Face -

A Word from

VICTOR LOPEZ

Have you ever seen a singer, actor, or musician on stage and thought, "Wow, they have it all together"? The bright lights, the awesome costumes, and the applause are a huge rush. But what you don't see is the secret battle that almost every performer has to fight. The biggest problem isn't forgetting your lines or hitting a wrong note. It's something called self-doubt. Self-doubt is that annoying little voice in your head that whispers, "You're not good enough." It makes you feel nervous, and it makes you compare yourself to everyone else. It’s like having a little bully that lives in your mind.

I remember my own battle with this. When I was younger, I was auditioning for a play. I had practiced a song so many times I could sing it in my sleep. But right before I went on stage, my brain went into panic mode. All I could hear was that negative voice. My hands got sweaty, my heart pounded, and when I opened my mouth to sing, my voice was shaky. I didn't get the part. The crazy thing is, my voice was fine! The problem was all in my head.

I also saw this with one of my students, let's call him Michael. He had an amazing voice, but he was terrified of singing in front of anyone. He would only sing when he was alone in a practice room here at Lopez Studios, Inc.. We tried to help him get over his fear, but nothing seemed to work. Then one day, our piano player messed up and played the wrong note. It was so unexpected that Michael burst out laughing. In that moment, he saw that making a mistake wasn’t the end of the world. He started to realize that performing is about sharing your joy, not about being perfect. That small, funny moment changed everything for him, and now he sings with so much confidence.

The good news is, you can beat self-doubt! It’s not a magic trick; it’s a mindset. At Lopez Studios, Inc., we teach our students that mistakes are just part of learning. We focus on getting better each day, not on being perfect from the start.

Here are a few tips to help you in your own journey:

Be Kind to Yourself: Everyone feels nervous sometimes. It's okay. Don't beat yourself up for it.

Talk Back to Your Inner Bully: When that voice says you're not good enough, ask, "Is that really true?"

Focus on the Fun: Remember why you love performing. Enjoy the process of learning and creating, not just the final result.

Embrace Your Mistakes: Nobody is perfect. Learn from your mistakes and move on.

Talk to Someone: Tell your teachers, friends, or parents how you feel. Sharing your worries can make them feel smaller. Our teachers at Lopez Studios, Inc. are here to support you in every way.

Take Care of You: Get enough sleep, eat healthy food, and exercise. A healthy body helps you have a healthy mind.

The path to becoming a great performer has its ups and downs. But your talent is real, and your passion is important. Your voice deserves to be heard. We are here to help you every step of the way, not just with your skills, but with your confidence too. Believe in yourself, enjoy the journey, and let your amazing voice shine!

As a singer, your vocal cords are your instrument. A flute would never be used to smash a golf ball, and a violin would never be used to propel a boat. Similarly, you should never abuse your voice.
