A Mentor's Guide for Parents Navigating

Their Child's Performing Arts Journey

The Top 5 Questions & Answers

BY VICTOR LOPEZ

Lopez Studios, Inc.

As a vocal coach and mentor here at  Lopez Studios Inc., I've had the immense privilege of working with countless young performers. I've seen the fire in their eyes, the nervous giggles before a big show, and the pure, unadulterated joy that comes from sharing their passion with the world. I'm writing this blog post directly to you, the parents, because I know you're the true heroes behind the scenes. You're the chauffeur, the cheerleader, the costume-finder, and the shoulder to cry on. You're also the ones with a million questions—and believe me, I've heard them all!

Let's dive into some of the top inquiries I get from parents just like you, with a few personal stories and laughs thrown in. Because while the performing arts are serious business, the journey itself should always be fun!

1. How do we know if our child is truly ready for the entertainment business, or if it’s just a passing phase?

This is the big one, isn't it? As a vocal coach, I can tell you that a fleeting interest is easy to spot. It's the child who wants to perform but doesn't want to put in the practice. True passion is different. It's the little one who belts out show tunes in the grocery store aisle (and yes, that's happened more than once!). It’s the teenager who spends hours in their room writing songs, not because they have to, but because they can't not.

I remember one little star, let’s call her Beth, who came to me for voice lessons. Her mom was worried it was just a phase. One week, Beth showed up to her lesson with a brand new song she'd written. It was about her dog, who had just "betrayed" her by eating her favorite toy. It was the most dramatic, hilarious, and heartfelt thing I had ever heard. That's when I knew: it wasn't a phase. It was a part of who she was. The real answer lies not just in talent, but in the joy they find in the process, whether they're on stage or just creating in the living room.

2. What are the very first practical steps we should take if our child expresses a serious interest in acting, singing, or dancing?

Once you see that undeniable spark, the next step is simple: exploration and foundation. You don't need a professional headshot and an agent on day one! The best starting point is finding the right performing arts school. Here at Lopez Studios Inc., we believe in nurturing the whole child. Our programs, from children's musical theater to our dedicated voice and piano lessons, are designed to build skills in a fun, supportive environment. I've seen the transformation firsthand. A nervous child, too shy to sing a note in front of me, finds a friend in a group acting class. Suddenly, they're not just singing; they're creating characters, building confidence, and laughing with their peers. This is the magic of what we do. The first step is to give them a place where they can grow, make mistakes, and discover their creative voice without the pressure of a professional industry.

3. How can we, as parents, best protect our child from the potential pressures and downsides that can sometimes exist within the entertainment industry?

This is your most important job. Your child’s well-being always, always, comes first. From my perspective as a mentor, the strongest armor you can give them is a solid foundation in who they are. At Lopez Studios Inc., we focus on a philosophy of Character, Integrity, Discipline, and Service.  We teach our students that their talent is just one part of their development.

I'll never forget the moment a student, after a tough audition rejection, came into my office completely defeated. We talked for a bit, not about the audition, but about the lessons we'd just had on stage presence and connecting with the audience. I reminded her of the hard work and passion she had put in. Her smile came back. We shifted the focus from the outcome to the journey, and that's the greatest lesson you can teach them. Celebrate their efforts, not just their successes. Remind them that they are worthy of love and security, no matter what happens in an audition room.

4. What kind of realistic time and financial investment are we looking at?

Let’s get real for a moment. This isn't a hobby that's free or commitment-free. A dedicated passion requires a dedicated investment of time and resources. This means managing busy schedules between school, rehearsals, and family time. It means investing in quality instruction, like the acting lessons and vocal coaching we offer here in Northern Virginia.

I once had a parent tell me she spent a full weekend driving her son to and from rehearsals, and still had a laugh about it. "My car knows the way to Lopez Studios better than I do!" she joked. It's a commitment, but the payoff isn't just a role; it’s a confident, creative, and disciplined child. Be honest with yourselves and with your child about the commitment, and remember that quality training is always the best investment.

5. How can we ensure that this whole experience remains positive, enriching, and fun?

Focus on the joy! The performing arts, at their core, are about play and expression. They're about finding your voice and sharing it with others. I've seen students who didn't get a part in a play become the best stagehands, learning about the whole production and forming lifelong friendships. I've seen students who couldn't hit a high note finally nail it, and the victory was louder than any applause.

One year, we did a student showcase, and one of the youngest performers completely forgot his lines. The audience, full of parents, started clapping and cheering him on. He just grinned, pointed at his mom in the front row, and made a funny face. The entire theater erupted in laughter. He didn't get the lines right, but he nailed the moment. That’s what it's all about. Let them be kids. Let them make mistakes. And let them find the fun in every single moment, because that's what makes the journey truly magical.

For parents in Northern VA, and beyond, remember that we at  Lopez Studios Inc. are here to support you and your child every step of the way. We’re more than a school; we’re a family. Come join us, and let's help your little star shine.

As a singer, your vocal cords are your instrument. A flute would never be used to smash a golf ball, and a violin would never be used to propel a boat. Similarly, you should never abuse your voice.
