The Inner Performer: A Philosophy for Unshakable Confidence
By Victor Lopez
For years, I've had the privilege of teaching singers and performers from all walks of life. I’ve seen raw talent that takes your breath away and dedication that knows no bounds. But I’ve also seen something else—something that holds a powerful grip on even the most gifted among us. It's the whisper of doubt. The fear of failure. The quiet belief that we aren't good enough.
My philosophy as a vocal coach and the foundation of our school, Lopez Studios Inc. Performing Arts School, is simple but profound: True performance starts from within.
The Beginning of a Better Way
After going through vocal and theater programs in high school and beyond, I saw a culture I didn't necessarily like. I knew there had to be a different and better way. I needed so much more than just technical training. I needed someone to reach me and care about me, not for what I could produce as a performer, or even what I couldn't. I needed a mentor who saw the person first.
This is where the philosophy of the inner performer was born. It's why our first step is never about the technical skill, but about building the confidence, the self-belief, and the sense of worth inside.
I remember being in high school with a passion for music that burned bright, but a confidence that flickered like a weak candle. I loved to sing, but the idea of truly putting myself out there—of performing with conviction—felt terrifying. I’d stand backstage, heart pounding, convinced I wasn't good enough, that my voice would crack, or that I’d forget the lyrics. I could practice for hours, nail every technical aspect, but when it came to that final step of truly believing in myself, I always stumbled.
Then, a mentor came into my life. This person didn't just teach me scales or vocal exercises; they saw something in me that I couldn't see in myself. They saw the potential, the raw talent, and more importantly, they saw the fear that was holding me back. They didn't just tell me to "be confident"; they guided me, challenged my self-doubt, and celebrated every small victory. They helped me understand that the voice I had inside was unique and powerful, and that my worth as a performer wasn't tied to perfection, but to authenticity.
And slowly, something shifted. That flickering candle started to burn brighter. I began to trust my instincts, to embrace my individuality, and to really connect with the music and the audience. I started to shine like never before, not because my voice suddenly became perfect, but because my inner performer finally aligned with my outer one.
The Unwavering Foundation of a Dream
That philosophy was tested in a bigger way when I decided to found Lopez Studios Inc. There were so many distractions, so many voices telling me it wouldn't work. People said I'd never do it, that the dream was too big, that the challenges would be too great. But my inner performer—my inner person—knew I couldn't give up.
Every moment I wanted to quit, every second I felt like the odds were stacked against me, I had people surrounding me who wouldn't let me give in. They told me not to give up, and I chose to get back up and try again. That unwavering determination is why we're still here, thirty years later.
Now, as a founder and a director, my goal is to give this same encouragement to every student who walks through our doors. You have to understand your purpose. You have to understand your inner performer. Everything truly starts from the inside and goes out. And when you connect the two, you become powerful, self-sufficient, and the only validation you need is the validation that comes from within.
The Philosophy in Action
Many people, especially in the entertainment business, focus on the "outer performer." They see the final product: the flawless dance move, the powerful vocal range, the perfect audition. They spend countless hours honing these external skills, believing that technique alone will lead to success. And while a strong technical foundation is crucial, it's only half of the equation.
The real magic happens when the inner performer —the part of you that holds your confidence, your self-belief, and your sense of worth—is strong enough to meet and fuse with the outer performer.
This is a challenge we see every day, not just with performers but with instructors too. Many talented teachers and coaches are incredible at their craft—they can teach you the how-to of any skill. But a common pitfall in our industry is the sole focus on that technical side. They deal only with the outer person, not realizing that the inner person is the core of the performer. This is not to tear down the work of others, but to highlight a crucial piece of the puzzle that is often missed.
We have found that our success is built on this very distinction. By starting with the inner performer —by nurturing confidence, belief, and resilience—we create a foundation that allows technical skills to flourish. Our students succeed in the entertainment business and in life because they don't just learn to perform; they learn to own their power.
This approach can sometimes feel uncomfortable for those who aren't used to it. Many people are accustomed to a transactional relationship with their instructors—30 minutes of a lesson and then out the door. But our studio doors are not revolving doors. We believe as teachers that we have to truly connect with the human being, the person, not just the student. It isn't often that you will come into a place of business and see teachers hugging kids, giving words of affirmation, and hearing "I love you" and "How was your day?" But that is the culture we have created, and we find that it works for us. In the long run, we see the benefit of it every time a former student, now an adult with children of their own, brings their kids back to our school. They come back and remember not just the lessons, but how loved, appreciated, and valued they felt. They tell me how those feelings of self-worth were the true foundation of their success in life.
If we can accomplish the main goal of having our students understand their self-worth and value, and know that they are unconditionally loved and appreciated, we believe the sky is the limit. There is no obstacle they cannot overcome and nothing they cannot accomplish. Their greatest strength is knowing their own power.
A New Chapter Awaits
Every great performance begins with a single step. For you, that step might be the hardest one of all: to invest in yourself. To stop focusing on what you lack and to start building on what you have. Your potential is limitless, but it's locked away until you give yourself permission to believe in it. We've seen firsthand how a change in philosophy can change a life. Are you ready to begin your journey and find your voice, from the inside out?
